Open-Mesh Mini-Router - Low-Cost Mesh
As a different approach, consider: you can get an embedded Linux box with WiFi, plenty of RAM and flash, a serial port and some spare GPIO pins for US$29 + shipping (http://www.open-mesh.com/index.php/low-cost/accton-mini-router-w-power-suppply.html). There is a Linux kernel module which lets you easily bitbang I2C over GPIO, or else you can build a 1-wire master with a few extra components if you are set on that. That way (assuming you already have a wireless network) there is no need to get the XBee adapter for your computer, or you could even save many days worth of temperature measurements straight to flash or send them over the Internet rather than having to have the computer on all the time, so you save on power.
