Daring Fireball: Complex

John Gruber on #iphone http://bit.ly/Gp4hX [from http://twitter.com/igeeo/statuses/1437949138]
"The problem is that while successful complex systems evolve from simple systems that work, not every simple system that works can support additional complexity. It’s not enough just to start simple, you have to start simple with a framework designed for future evolution and growth."
“A complex system that works is invariably found to have evolved from a simple system that worked. The inverse proposition also appears to be true: A complex system designed from scratch never works and cannot be made to work. You have to start over, beginning with a working simple system.”
The Mindfulness Guide for the Super Busy: How to Live Life to the Fullest | Zen Habits

The idea of being mindful — being present, being more conscious of life as it happens — seems a bit impossible to many of the super busy.
The idea of being mindful — being present, being more conscious of life as it happens — seems a bit impossible to many of the super busy. But not only is it possible, I’d submit that it’s desirable, and that it’ll help the busy (and non-busy) achieve their goals and enjoy life more fully. One of my favorite web big shots, Digg.com founder Kevin Rose (who is actually heading several companies and multiple other projects), has “be mindful” at the top of his resolutions for 2009. I hope he’s doing well, and I’d love to hear how someone as busy as he is implements a resolution like that. But in case Mr. Rose, and other super-busy types, are having trouble being mindful and living life to the fullest, this guide will help. Enjoying Life and Achieving Goals It seems contradictory to those who are used to sacrificing living for pursuing their goals … but cultivating mindfulness will help you achieve your goals and enjoy life more. Focusing on one task at a time, putting yourself fully in
Keep It Simple, Stupid

K-I-S-S: Keep It Simple, Stupid. It’s a mantra that always pops into my head when I’m looking at new startups. A lot of them seem to want to do a million different things because other companies have been successful at one of those things in the past. But that’s a bad idea. Way too many new products and services are too complicated. And I would suggest, often fail as a direct result of that.
A great article on simple design and how it just...works.
is that it was so much neater, cleaner — yes, simpler. But with an explosion in growth, came an explosion in features. And, in turn, an explosion in complexity.

I liked this article -- particularly the part about Google Labs (so true about how to add new features)

Article on a book I'd like to read
“The beat of my heart has grown deeper, more active, and yet more peaceful, and it is as if I were all the time storing up inner riches…My [life] is one long sequence of inner miracles.”
Well written piece.
If you’re the kind of person who prefers freedom to security, who feels more comfortable in a small room than a large one and who finds that happiness comes from matching your wants to your needs, then running to stand still isn’t where your joy lies. In New York, a part of me was always somewhere else, thinking of what a simple life in Japan might be like. Now I’m there, I find that I almost never think of Rockefeller Center or Park Avenue at all.
happiness, like peace or passion, comes most freely when it isn’t pursued.

Something is elegant if it is two things at once: unusually simple and surprisingly powerful. One without the other leaves you short of elegant. And sometimes the “unusual simplicity” isn’t about what’s there, it’s about what isn’t. At first glance, elegant things seem to be missing something.

13 small things to simplify your workday | Zen Habits
http://zenhabits.net/2010/03/simplify-your-workday/
This is a great site. With all of the hecticness in our lives today, I really appreciate anyone who can help cut through the fog and shine some light on how to simplify life and make the things that really matter in life shine through. That is what this site does. I this list of 13 small things to simplify your workday, I have already applied many of these suggestions, as it has become a necessity being a special needs parent having to care 24/7 for an autistic child. Nevertheless, there is always room for improvement and I can see that "batch distractions" offers me yet another big area that I can improve on. Since I spend so much time on line, it is an area where I can find that I am too easily distracted by various electronic things....email, social networking, maintaining my own web site, on-line research, music promotion, etc. My next project will be to figure out how I can streamline this and batch these activities into smaller chunks of time.
Good advice to increase productivity.
