Kevin Kelly's visie op de verschuiving van eigendom van content naar toegang tot content
"Better than owning" - a world of subscriptions giving instant universal access (to content, at least)
Better than Owning
Better Than Owning Ownership is not as important as it once was. I use roads that I don't own. I have immediate access to 99% of the roads and highways of the world (with a few exceptions) because they are a public commons. We are all granted this street access via our payment of local taxes. For almost any purpose I can think of, the roads of the world serve me as if I owned them. Even better than if I owned them since I am not in charge of maintaining them. The bulk of public infrastructure offers the same "better than owning" benefits.
Future. Very very cool.

The basic premise of the method is to kill the HTTP headers that tells the content to expire so that the content will be cached - where you then drag it out of the cache, convert it to MP3, and add it to your library. We’ll be using a small program called Proxomitron, and as usual, we’re focused on Firefox.

I wrote a Perl script to crawl through the Live Music Archive and make an XML file of all the streamable songs, and now I'm putting the information from the XML file into MySQL databases to populate this interface. I'm also tweaking the interface to make it look nice and neat. Dewey is named after the Dewey Decimal System because it organizes the Live Music Archive library in the same way that the Dewey Decimal System does. I understand that sifting through that many artists is a bit daunting if you don't know what you're looking for. I've added Genre tags that are pulled from Last.fm to help you find your style, and a search function to help you find exactly what you want. While I look into better options, and as the database grows, let me suggest that you use the "Concerts From Today" tab to narrow down your listening possibilities while browsing. I hope to be adding rating, tagging and commenting functionality soon.

Music Industry to Abandon Mass Suits - WSJ.com
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122966038836021137.html
Music Industry to Abandon Mass Suits
The decision represents an abrupt shift of strategy for the industry, which has opened legal proceedings against about 35,000 people since 2003. Critics say the legal offensive ultimately did little to stem the tide of illegally downloaded music. And it created a public-relations disaster for the industry, whose lawsuits targeted, among others, several single mothers, a dead person and a 13-year-old girl. [us album sales] Instead, the Recording Industry Association of America said it plans to try an approach that relies on the cooperation of Internet-service providers. The trade group said it has hashed out preliminary agreements with major ISPs under which it will send an email to the provider when it finds a provider's customers making music available online for others to take.
When you retard fair use with pointless DRM and then sue anonymous children for illegally downloading music while ignoring those of the execs at the top of the music industry, you're asking for a public relations nightmare. Now, with more than 35k lawsuits to its credit, RIAA says it will finally end the legal assault against consumers that began back in '03. RIAA will instead, focus its anti-piracy efforts with ISPs. Under the new plan, the RIAA will contact ISPs when illegal uploading is detected. The ISP will then contact the customer with a notice that would ultimately be followed by a reduction or cessation of service. As you'd expect, the RIAA is not commenting on which ISPs they are in cahoots with. The RIAA also says that it won't require ISPs to reveal the identities of individuals but could, of course, go after individuals who are heavy uploaders or repeat offenders. For the moment though, it appears that single-mothers are in the clear.

Last.fm – the Blog · "Techcrunch are full of shit"
http://blog.last.fm/2009/02/23/techcrunch-are-full-of-shit
On Friday night a technology blog called Techcrunch posted a vicious and completely false rumour about us: that Last.fm handed data to the RIAA so they could track who’s been listening to the “leaked” U2 album. I denied it vehemently on the Techcrunch article, as did several other Last.fm staffers. We denied it in the Last.fm forums, on twitter, via email – basically we denied it to anyone that would listen, and now we’re denying it on our blog. According to Ars Technica, even the RIAA don’t know where the rumour came from. The Ars Technica article is worth a read by the way, as it explains how the album was leaked in the first place by U2’s record label. All the data and technical side of Last.fm is hosted in London and run by the team here. We keep a close eye on what data mining jobs we run, not because we’re paranoid the RIAA is trying to infiltrate us, but because time on our Hadoop Cluster (where the data lives) is so precious and we have lots of important jobs that run every

8 reasons why the music industry can't blame piracy alone for its decline in revenue.
During The Pirate Bay trial, the music industry placed the blame for the decline in their revenues squarely on the shoulders of file-sharers. Their logic is clearly flawed, but it could sway the verdict if no alternative explanation is presented. So, if piracy isn’t to blame, then what is *actually* killing the music industry?

Interesting post about Monty Python putting up free, high quality content from their archives onto YouTube, and then seeing a 23,000 percent increase in sales of their DVDs and merchandise. When you have a huge body of work, this is a great way to "prime the pump." Unfortunately, it's a tough way for new artists/producers/musicians to make a living.

Can you hear THIS? Musicians high frequency hearing test | NoiseAddicts music and audio blog
http://www.noiseaddicts.com/2009/03/can-you-hear-this-hearing-test/
Here is a list of tones that go from 8Hz all the way up to 22,000Hz. It’s fairly common for people who are over 25 years of age to not be able to hear above 15Hz, so this will help you find out where your high frequency hearing cuts off.
isn't the upper limit of audibility 20kHz? anyway, i can hear up to 20kHz, just barely.
I can hear 18kHz easy... 19 sounds like I hear a bit after the click and it immediately drops off... 20 sounds like there is a low buzz on the track... I'm guessing I'm not actually hearing the 20kHz sound... I was a drummer for 6 years... seems like I should have lost more hearing than that.
I can't hear the 19 kHz tone but I choose to blame my PowerBook's ancient speakers.

Can Rhythmic Analysis Demonstrate the Use of Robotic Beats?
I’ve always been curious about which drummers use a click track and which don’t, so I thought it might be fun to try to build a click track detector using the Echo Nest remix SDK ( remix is a Python library that allows you to analyze and manipulate music). In my first attempt, I used remix to analyze a track and then I just printed out the duration of each beat in a song and used gnuplot to plot the data. The results weren’t so good - the plot was rather noisy. It turns out there’s quite a bit of variation from beat to beat. In my second attempt I averaged the beat durations over a short window, and the resulting plot was quite good.

About these scripts Dec 23, 2007 by Teridon These scripts interface with iTunes (for Windows only) via the COM interface. Most of them are written in Perl, but I have provided EXE versions for those that don't want or have Perl installed. Just download the zip and run the EXE inside it. If you don't trust my EXE, you can download the Perl version and look at the source code before running it. I use ActiveState Perl, but they should work fine with any perl distribution for Windows. I have tested these with both iTunes 6 and 7 (up to 7.5). Most of them should work with iTunes 8 as well, but I have not tested them yet. Some scripts require iTunes 7 -- these are noted below. Also, if you try to run them against iTunes 6, they will refuse to run. All of these scripts are licensed under the GNU GPL v2 . In summary, that means they are free to download, use, and modify.

But Not Until At Least 2011
I had a surprisingly candid lunch conversation last week with a big music label executive, and part of our talk focused on the future of music. I asked the usual question: Why are you guys so damned clueless? Your business is disintegrating before your eyes, and all you do is go for short term cash gains (lawsuits, mafia-style collection rackets from venture backed music startups, etc.). The long term costs are horrendous - an entire generation or two of young music lovers feel no remorse at outright stealing music. Particularly since most online streaming is now free, it’s hard to understand why downloading or sharing songs should be a crime. His response: It’s all part of a master plan. The labels fully understand that recorded music, streamed or downloaded, is going to be free in the future (we’ve argued this relentlessly). CD sales continue to decline by 20% per year, and the only thing that’ll stop that trend is when those sales reach zero. Nothing will replace those revenues.

Someone having the idea of recording audio at arcades is pretty rad, but having the tapes survive from as far back as 1982 is even better. I could sit all day and listen to this. Some people listen to whale sounds to relax and focus, arcade background noise does it for me apparently. Someone needs to do this for pinball machines.

Need a worry-free background track for a multimedia project, or just some new tunes to work into your daily mix? The Free Music Archive, a project of indie freeform station WFMU, has downloads and streams galore. Inspired by the ideas and ethos behind Creative Commons licensing, the tracks on the FMA are offered for whatever use you want. Use them to soundtrack your latest YouTube epic, remix them and release them, or download and share them with friends. The site also boasts a kind of quality control to the database of songs both live and recoded, selected by WFMU's audio archivists and curators. The search functionality works pretty well, and can be re-sorted by genre, album, or other criteria. If you really dig the tunes you're finding, there are links to the artists' albums and a tip jar for each. Otherwise, stream, grab, and go at your leisure. Free to use, sign-up required for the social aspects of the site, like mix publishing and sharing. Free Music Archive [via ReadWriteWeb]

The Tippopotamus: MediaMonkey scripts to make your mp3 tags consistent
http://tippopotamus.blogspot.com/2009/04/mediamonkey-scripts-to-make-your-mp3.html
I hate it when tags don't match up. For example, depending on where your tag data has come from you could end up with a host of different artist names: * Guns and Roses * Guns n Roses * Guns N Roses * Guns 'n' Roses * Guns 'n Roses * gunsnroses * GnR * GnFR There are a plethora of different things that can be wrong with tags - missing track numbers, no album art, volumes and disc numbers - the list goes on. These bother me, but may not irk you. If you are like me, correcting this sort of mess is something that would require a lot of manual tagging work, since finding the files is difficult and correcting them is a labourious process. Or so I thought. MediaMonkey comes with a few built-in functions and scripts that can help you to tame your mp3 collection. However, the real power comes in the scripts nice people have written to solve tagging problems. Here follows a synopsis of what I have found useful… 1. Built-in MediaMonkey Features Firstly, you

Duh.
Pirated Music is actually...good?
According to research, those who download 'free' music are also the industry's largest audience for digital sales
Pretty obvious: the more you get to listen, the more you eventually buy.
Piracy may be the bane of the music industry but according to a new study, it may also be its engine. A report from the BI Norwegian School of Management has found that those who download music illegally are also 10 times more likely to pay for songs than those who don't. Everybody knows that music sales have continued to fall in recent years, and that filesharing is usually blamed. We are made to imagine legions of internet criminals, their fingers on track-pads, downloading songs via BitTorrent and never paying for anything. One of the only bits of good news amid this doom and gloom is the steady rise in digital music sales. Millions of internet do-gooders, their fingers on track-pads, who pay for songs they like – purchasing them from Amazon or iTunes Music Store. And yet according to Professor Anne-Britt Gran's new research, these two groups may be the same.
Gizmodo - Best Video I've Seen Today Will Make You Smile - Songs around the world

If this video doesn't bring a tear to your eyes and makes you smile for the rest of the day, you are a cold hearted bastard. Watch it from beginning to end—you won't regret it. This cover of Stand By Me was recorded by completely unknown artists in a street virtual studio all around the world. It all started with a base track—vocals and guitar—recorded on the streets of Santa Monica, California, by a street musician called Roger Ridley. The base track was then taken to New Orleans, Louisiana, where Grandpa Elliott—a blind singer from the French Quarter—added vocals and harmonica while listening to Ridley's base track on headphones. In the same city, Washboard Chaz's added some metal percussion to it. And from there, it just gets rock 'n' rolling bananas: The producers took the resulting mix all through Europe, Africa, and South America, adding new tracks with multiple instruments and vocals that were assembled in the final version you are seeing in this video. All done with a simple

Rivermaya makes the list. O yey!
100 obscure and remarcable cd covers
Some CD covers feature heavily edited and airbrushed vanity photos of the musicians or recording artists. Thankfully, others are much more creative and work to create a cover image that reflects the mood, attitude or feel of the music it promotes. The most striking designs are those that capture both a buyer’s attention and the essense of the music. The CD cover art designs and concepts featured in this showcase present dramatic, quirky, unusual or unique artwork. This type of cover art can make a big difference when a little-known band releases an album. Captivating or iconic cover art can make a band instantly recognizable, which increases sales, which in turn boosts airplay and subsequently demand for the music. Mainstream marketing is rarely this attractive, and the wide variety of beautiful CD cover art makes browsing CDs an enjoyable experience that reaches far beyond the music.

moving itunes to external hard drive
If you're an iTunes user (download for Windows|Mac) whose appetite for music, movies, and podcasts is outstripping the capacity of your computer, it might be a good time to think about offloading that library to an external hard drive or a separate internal drive. If you do it right, the process is relatively simple, although the transfer time could take an hour or more, depending on the size of your media library. To walk you through it, here's a step-by-step video and slide show tutorial on how to move your iTunes library to an external hard drive.

Landmark study: DRM truly does make pirates out of us all - Ars Technica
http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/news/2009/05/landmark-study-drm-truly-does-make-pirates-out-of-us-all.ars
DRM has affected how people use their content beyond simply protecting IP; restricts what would otherwise be considered fair use.
[ars technica]
A UK researcher has spent years interviewing people about whether DRM has affected their ability to use content in ways ordinarily protected by the law. Surprise! It has, even leading one sight-impaired woman to piracy.
End users are allowed to time-shift programs, but Jill Johnstone of the National Consumer Council notes that "the way DRM is being used is causing serious problems for consumers, including unreasonable limitations on the use of digital products and infringement of consumer rights. "

Are downloads really killing the music industry? Or is it something else? | Technology | guardian.co.uk
http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/datablog/2009/jun/09/games-dvd-music-downloads-piracy
The music industry does like to insist that filesharing - aka illegal downloading - is killing the industry: that every one of the millions of music files downloaded each day counts as a
David Lammy, minister for intellectual property, said: "Illegal downloading robs our economy of millions of pounds every year and seriously damages business and innovation throughout the UK. "It is something that needs tackling, and we are serious about doing so." Well, up to a point, minister. Ben Goldacre took apart the rather dodgy calculations behind the claims on Saturday. But it left me wondering. Why does the music industry persist in saying that every download is a lost sale? If you even think about it, it can't be true. People - even downloaders - only have a finite amount of money. In times gone by, sure, they would have been buying vinyl albums. But if you stopped them downloading, would they troop out to the shops and buy those songs? I don't think so. I suspect they're doing something different. I think they're spending the money on something else.
Yes, downloaders aren't spending money on the music industry, and in that way they are hurting it. But I'd argue that the true volume of "lost" sales is nowhere near the claims made. Assume that music couldn't be copied (as many games can't). I don't think that the volume of music sales would equate to all those downloads. At best, it would be £600m larger.

Had he not been driven – by a cabal of bankers, agents, doctors and advisers – to commit to the gruelling 50 concerts in London’s O2 Arena, I believe he would still be alive today. During the last weeks and months of his life, Jackson made desperate attempts to prepare for the concert series scheduled for next month – a series that would have earned millions for the singer and his entourage, but which he could never have completed, not mentally, and not physically.

Collapse in illegal sharing and boom in streaming brings music to executives' ears
"Music fan Dominique Wakefield, 24, said she had stopped downloading music because of concern that it would infect her computer. "I didn't even realise it was illegal for a long time, until I heard that the government were trying to stop it. That did put me off, but one of the big reasons I stopped doing it was because I would get viruses, more pop ups on my computer."

- Tools of Change for Publishing
"Whether they realize it or not, media companies are in the service business, not the content business. Look at iTunes: if people paid for content, then it would follow that better content would cost more money. But every song costs the same. Why would people pay the same price for goods of (often vastly) different quality? Because they're not paying for the goods they're paying Apple for the service of providing a selection of convenient options easy to pay for and easy to download."

Michael Jackson and the Zombieconomy - Umair Haque - HarvardBusiness.org
http://blogs.harvardbusiness.org/haque/2009/06/jackson.html
amazing read this
Want to know why we have a zombieconomy? Because the beancounters killed the incentives to create real value. ... That's the big problem behind the zombieconomy. We don't reward people for creating, growing, nurturing, or even remixing assets. We just reward them for allocating the same old assets. That 's not an economy: it's just a game of musical chairs. Hence, no new finance, healthcare, educational, auto, or, yes, music, industry — for decades.
No wonder everyone wants to be a banker, investor, or [insert beancounter here]. There's no money left in anything else. That's the big problem behind the zombieconomy. We don't reward people for creating, growing, nurturing, or even remixing assets. We just reward them for allocating the same old assets.
If the world's biggest pop star only made $12 million a year from his recordings, why would anyone make serious music? Where did the rest of the money go? Why, straight into record labels' pockets. Did they make better music with it? Nope — they made Britney and Lady GaGa. And that's how they killed themselves: by underinvesting in quality, to rake in the take.
Want to know why we have a zombieconomy? Because the beancounters killed the incentives to create real value.

Some of the best festivals and conferences of the year are gone by now, but if we’d just want to judge them by their online presence we can do it from the comfort of our couch. There was some research involved in this article, you wouldn’t believe it how many of the biggest events in the world have so flat and unexciting websites. However, we’ve finally managed to find quite a few cool ones, so we wish you a pleasant and inspirational journey. In this post we present some of the beautiful, original and inspirational web designs of festivals and conferences that took place or are going to take place this year. For most people, dropping a CD into their disc drive and clicking "Import" in iTunes is good enough. For music freaks, though, it's not—and with good reason. Here's how to digitize your tunes, the right way. First off, some reasons to take this road: iTunes is a decent audio encoder, and it'll get your music from point A—the CD—to points B, C and D—your computer, your MP3 player and your backup drive—without much trouble. But it'll do it with a less-than-great encoder, with occasionally inconsistent tagging, with album art that'll only work on Apple devices, and without support for the best lossless audio formats and MP3 encoding options, which you probably want, whether you know it or not. In short, the ripping process deserves a little more care than iTunes or Windows Media player can give it. You can pay people for this, which feels dumb and wasteful, or you can do it yourself. It's not difficult, at all. Here's what you do:

Feature-wise, an iTunes LP is a DRM-free album in high-quality 256kbps AAC format, along with digital extras (visualizer(s), photos, videos and interviews) wrapped in a custom WebKit-powered site.
The “deluxe album” format from the iTunes Store is an attempt to revitalize music sales by providing an immersive digital experience complete with detailed art reminiscent of when people used to buy records. Feature-wise, an iTunes LP is a DRM-free album in high-quality 256kbps AAC format, along with digital extras (visualizer(s), photos, videos and interviews) wrapped in a custom WebKit-powered site.
"The iTunes LP experience is accomplished with HTML 4.01, CSS and JS. The interface feels very Flash-like, but there is no trace of it. The CSS animations are elaborate and smooth. ... As a music fan, and as a web developer, I couldn’t be more pleased with the new iTunes LP offering. If your audience is significantly Apple-oriented (e.g. a site about Mac rumors or a popular iPhone app) this proves that you can provide an incredible experience using only JavaScript and some proposed CSS3 properties."

Duty Cycle Generator - NES Music by Neil Baldwin
http://dutycyclegenerator.com/
I wrote my first music on the NES 20 years ago and have recently been amazed to discover that the "chip music" scene is still going strong. So, in a bid to do my bit to keep the history alive and because some of my music is either missing, mis-credited or in some cases never even saw the light of day, I decided I'd put together a little document of my work and experiences. You'll need Flash to play the MP3s via the embedded audio players or you can download a ZIP file containing all the songs for each game. Alternatively you can download the .NSF file but you'll need a player to play these; personally I use Audio Overload but there's lots of others. Keep checking back as I'll be adding more games in (roughly) chronological order along with an attempt to write something vaguely interesting about them. If you want to get in touch, please do: neil@dutycyclegenerator.com You can subscribe to the RSS feed to be informed of updates/changes. New! - you can leave me some praise/abuse in t

hoe een itunes lp te html-en
iTunes LPs are a new format introduced by Apple in version 9.0 of their popular iTunes software. The idea is to recreate the old LP experience by providing additional content such a lyrics, liner notes, photographs and other content. At this moment these iTunes LPs are available for a select list of new releases on the iTunes store. However we think it would be nice to have many older, out-of-print, obscure albums or albums on indie-labels to get the same experience; and with that in mind we started working on finding out exactly how this new format works, in order to share our results with the community.
Site that provides tutorials and resources on how to write the stuff for iTunes LP, which is a sort of iTunes + which is designed for liner notes but is cool for basically little html type packages.

Seth's Blog: Music vs. the music industry
http://sethgodin.typepad.com/seths_blog/2009/02/music-vs-the-music-industry.html
The music industry is really focused on the ‘industry’ part and not so much on the ‘music’ part. This is the greatest moment in the history of music if your dream is to distribute as much music as possible to as many people as possible, or if your goal is to make it as easy as possible to become heard as a musician. There’s never been a time like this before. So if your focus is on music, it’s great. If your focus is on the industry part and the limos, the advances, the lawyers, polycarbonate and vinyl, it’s horrible.

Illegal downloaders 'spend the most on music', says poll - Crime, UK - The Independent
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/crime/illegal-downloaders-spend-the-most-on-music-says-poll-1812776.html
People who illegally download music from the internet also spend more money on music than anyone else, according to a new study. The survey, published today, found that those who admit illegally downloading music spent an average of £77 a year on music – £33 more than those who claim that they never download music dishonestly. The findings suggest that plans by the Secretary of State for Business, Peter Mandelson, to crack down on illegal downloaders by threatening to cut their internet connections with a "three strikes and you're out" rule could harm the music industry by punishing its core customers.

Playlists Based on Activity
PlaylistNowFM is a crafty music discovery tool that creates playlists based on what you are doing right now. It essentially combines Twitter and other music services like Blip.fm and Last.fm. Instead of asking for your favorite artist or song, it asks you what you are doing and gives you an appropriate playlist for it. You can use PlaylistNowFm without registering, but once you sign up you can add and organize playlist, bookmark songs, and make your playlist visible to others. You can also discover the most searched playlists with the auto-suggest feature in the search bar.
Too Much Joy» Blog Archive » My Hilarious Warner Bros. Royalty Statement
http://www.toomuchjoy.com/?p=1397
"I’m simply explaining why I’m not embarrassed that I 'owe' Warner Bros. almost $400,000. They didn’t make a lot of money off of Too Much Joy. But they didn’t lose any, either. So whenever you hear some label flak claiming 98% of the bands they sign lose money for the company, substitute the phrase 'just don’t earn enough' for the word 'lose.'"
A great post from a musician's perspective on digital royalties for recording artists. Lots of insight here. The bottom line is that, moving forward, there has to be absolute and real-time transparency in royalties for artists and authors.
So I was naively excited when I opened the envelope. And my answer was right there on the first page. In five years, our three albums earned us a grand total of… $62.47
So I was naively excited when I opened the envelope. And my answer was right there on the first page. In five years, our three albums earned us a grand total of… $62.47 What the fuck? I mean, we all know that major labels are supposed to be venal masters of hiding money from artists, but they’re also supposed to be good at it, right? This figure wasn’t insulting because it was so small, it was insulting because it was so stupid.
I got something in the mail last week I’d been wanting for years: a Too Much Joy royalty statement from Warner Brothers that finally included our digital earnings. Though our catalog has been out of print physically since the late-1990s, the three albums we released on Giant/WB have been available digitally for about five years. Yet the royalty statements I received every six months kept insisting we had zero income, and our unrecouped balance ($395,277.18!)* stubbornly remained the same.
A rant on recouping an artist's repayment. Talks about revenue earned from digital sales.

WHY I AM NOT AFRAID TO TAKE YOUR MONEY, BY AMANDA FUCKING PALMER
"listen. artists need to make money to eat and to continue to make art. artists used to rely on middlemen to collect their money on their behalf, thereby rendering themselves innocent of cash-handling in the public eye. artists will now be coming straight to you (yes YOU, you who want their music, their films, their books) for their paychecks. please welcome them. please help them. please do not make them feel badly about asking you directly for money. dead serious: this is the way shit is going to work from now on and it will work best if we all embrace it and don’t fight it. unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve surely noticed that artists ALL over the place are reaching out directly to their fans for money. how you do it is a different matter. maybe i should be more tasteful. maybe i should not stop my concerts and auction off art. i do not claim to have figured out the perfect system, not by a long shot."
if you think i’m going to pass up a chance to put my hat back down in front of the collected audience on my virtual sidewalk and ask them to give their hard-earned money directly to me instead of to roadrunner records, warner music group, ticketmaster, and everyone else out there who’s been shamelessly raping both fan and artist for years, you’re crazy.

An artist named Iri5 specializes in using non traditional media such as old books, audio cassettes, playing cards, magazines, credit cards, basically whatever he can find. She says,"It feels great to work with strange, older materials. Things that have a mind of their own. Most everything I use has been thrown away or donated at some point. Past its prime, like some of the finest things in the world. What she’s created with some old cassette tapes and reel tapes is simply remarkable. Using these old tapes, iri5 has turned them into works of art in a series that she calls “Ghost in the Machine.” The series portrays celebrities and musicians such as Marilyn Monroe, Bob Dylan, Robert DiNero, Jimi Hendrix, Ian Curtis, and Jim Morrison.

Google will soon launch a music service, we’ve heard from multiple sources, and the company has spent the last several weeks securing content for the launch of the service from the major music labels. One source has referred to the new service as Google Audio. We’re still gathering details, but our understanding is the service will be very different to the Google China music download service that they launched in 2008. That service, which is only available in China, allows users to search for music and download it for free. This new service will be available for at least U.S. users, our sources confirm, although it isn’t clear if it’s a download or streaming service, or both. Google already has a decent (if little used) music search engine that can be accessed by simply typing “music:” before a query. But songs are not available for streaming or download from those searches.

<blockquote> <p>So let’s get going. SuperCollider is my tool of choice here. I start with a simple waveform. I want to use a sawtooth wave as the oscillator source, it has a rich and harmonic spectrum consisting of even and odd partials. I’ll want to filter the upper partials later on. Here is some beginning code:</p> <pre> //30 oscillators together, distributed across the stereo field ( { var numVoices = 30; //generating initial random fundamentals: var fundamentals = {rrand(200.0, 400.0)}!numVoices; Mix ({|numTone| var freq = fundamentals[numTone]; Pan2.ar ( Saw.ar(freq), rrand(-0.5, 0.5), //stereo placement of voices numVoices.reciprocal //scale the amplitude of each voice ) }!numVoices); }.play; ) </pre> </blockquote>
If you’ve ever watched a movie in a movie theater, chances are that you are familiar with the “Deep Note”, the audio logo of THX. That sound is one of the first sounds we hear at the beginning of movie trailers in a THX-certified venue. The origins of that sound tickled my curiosity and I did some little research. I’m deeply moved by the history behind it, and I want to share what I’ve learned with you. Then we will move on to create that sound ourselves, get your scissors ready, and some glue!
Lifehacker - BPM Analyzer Calculates the BPM of Your Music, Adds Tags - BPM Analyzer
http://lifehacker.com/5295594/bpm-analyzer-calculates-the-bpm-of-your-music-adds-tags
Windows/Mac OS X: Free application BPM Analyzer determines the beats per minute (BPM) of any MP3 on your computer, then automatically updates the ID3 tags with the BPM info—perfect for finding workout music to hit the 120-140 BPM sweet spot. Just drag and drop tracks into the BPM Analyzer's interface and let it automatically calculate the BPM and update the ID3 tags—meaning all the work you have to do is the dragging and dropping. You can drag whole folders (say, for example, your iTunes library folder) into the app, so it's a breeze to get those BPMs added without much effort. The app did hiccup on me a couple of times with a few tracks, but for the most part it worked exactly as advertised. The MixMeister BPM Analyzer is a free download, works on Windows and Mac OS X. For an alternative BPM app and playlist builder for Windows, check out previously mentioned BeatScanner. Thanks Eric!

How Harvard Law threw down the gauntlet to the RIAA - Ars Technica
http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/news/2009/02/tell-the-riaa-to-take-a-hike-how-harvard-law-threw-down-the-gauntlet.ars
(edit this later)
Law professor Charles Nesson and John Palfrey, director of the Berkman Center for Internet & Society (which Nesson co-founded), made their position clear. "Recently, the president of the Recording Industry Association of America, Cary Sherman, wrote to Harvard to challenge the university administration to stop acting as a 'passive conduit' for students downloading music," they wrote in 2007. "We agree. Harvard and the 22 universities to which the RIAA has sent 'pre-litigation notices' ought to take strong, direct action... and tell the RIAA to take a hike."

In retrospect, Harvard's eventual involvement was obvious. As far back as 2007, we noted that RIAA prelitigation letters had yet to be sent to Harvard, and one reason for that may have been the quite public opposition of Harvard Law School to the entire RIAA legal campaign.

"If you grow up in a very strong religion like Catholicism you certainly cultivate in yourself a certain taste for the intensity of ideas. You expect to be engaged with ideas strongly whether you are for or against them. If you are part of a religion that very strongly insists that you believe then to decide not to do that is quite a big hurdle to jump over. You never forget the thought process you went through. It becomes part of your whole intellectual picture."

"The record age was just a blip. It was a bit like if you had a source of whale blubber in the 1840s and it could be used as fuel. "If you think of the mid- to late-50s when all of this started to happen for me, the experience of listening to sound was so different from now. Stereo didn't exist. If you listened to music outside of church, apart from live music, which was very rare, it was through tiny speakers. It was a nice experience but a very small experience." ... Phone calls, movies, music, TV – Stockholm has emerged as the epicentre of an online revolution, giving us all what we want, instantly, for free. Tim Walker reports from the world's new digital capital
Ek acknowledges that, without the far-reaching effects of The Pirate Bay and its ilk, Spotify could never have come to fruition. "There is a big file-sharing community here in Sweden," he says. "It's how people want to consume content. They don't want to be illegal, but they want to have everything at their fingertips instantly, which is what The Pirate Bay facilitated. The best way to compete with that is to come up with a better product. Spotify exists because of piracy."

The Colorado-based Love Hope Strength foundation hosted an event recently called "Peru Rocks", where 63 travelers - including musicians from The Fixx, Fastball, The Alarm and more - along with cancer survivors, and their supporters from around the world joined together to raise funds and awareness of cancer-related issues in Peru. The trip took the trekkers from Cuzco, Peru to the heights of Machu Picchu, back down to Lima, where they met with patients and doctors of INEN, Peru's main cancer center. The travelers finished their trip with a concert in Lima on October 15th. Funds raised on the trip were donated to INEN, and will be used to establish a fully staffed and equipped medical bus that will serve rural Peru, screening residents for cancer.

John Mellencamp: On My Mind: The State of the Music Business
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/john-mellencamp/on-my-mind-the-state-of-t_b_177836.html
Over the last few years, we have all witnessed the decline of the music business, highlighted by finger-pointing and blame directed against record companies, artists, internet file sharing and any other theories for which a case could be made. We've read and heard about the "good old days" and how things used to be. People remember when music existed as an art that motivated social movements. Artists and their music flourished in back alleys, taverns and barns until, in some cases, a popular groundswell propelled it far and wide. These days, that possibility no longer seems to exist. After 35 years as an artist in the recording business, I feel somehow compelled, not inspired, to stand up for our fellow artists and tell that side of the story as I perceive it. Had the industry not been decimated by a lack of vision caused by corporate bean counters obsessed with the bottom line, musicians would have been able to stick with creating music rather than trying to market it as well.
Statement about the state of teh music industry
As Mellencamp states rock and roll used to spur "social movements" that were influential enough change the fabric of our society. Rock was born in cotton fields South morphed into blues became when white kids started play blues. Then came hippies then punks rap. In every case music a protest for those who felt oppressed some way. What sucks is this medium has been take over by very people it meant oppose: old rich guys. . .(who are probably fat too. .)."--via comment.

KEXP 90.3 FM - Live Performances
http://www.kexp.org/aspnet_client/live.asp
DJs at Seattle’s KEXP have a knack for picking out the most promising up-and-coming bands and inviting them to drop by the station’s studios. Now you can hear thousands of the ensuing performances online. Available as streaming audio on KEXP’s website, the archives date back to 2001: You’ll hear killer sessions by indie darlings like Neko Case, the Mountain Goats, CSS, and the Shins. But don’t miss the recordings by brilliant international musicians: Hindustani slide guitarist Debashish Bhattacharya (who sounds like an Indian classical musician scoring a Western’s soundtrack) and the Zimbabwean group Mawungira Enharira (whose gently shimmying songs are built around the chiming mbira) are especially worthwhile.

between 15 and 20 are more likely to buy music via paid download than on a physical CD, though most still purchased at least one CD in the last six months. However, when it comes to P2P, it seems that those who wave the pirate flag are the most click-happy on services like the iTunes Store and Amazon MP3. BI said that those who said they download illegal music for "free" bought ten times as much legal music as those who never download music illegally.
Those who download "free" music from P2P networks are more likely to spend money on legit downloads than those who are squeaky clean, according to a new report out of Norway. The music labels, however, aren't quite buying that data.

Trent Reznor is still cool even though he's not single man http://bit.ly/JuYKP [from http://twitter.com/DangerGranger/statuses/2185029292]
good comment below
Trent Reznor versus anonymous douchebags. "The reason no record label knows how to market anything to new media is they don't live there. They don't get it because they don't use it. What you've seen happen with the marketing and presentation of NIN over the last years is a direct result of living next to you, listening to you, consuming with you and interacting with you. Directly. There's no handlers or PR people here, it's me and my guys - that's it. There's no real plan, even - it's just trying to do the right thing that respects you the fan, the music, and me the artist. That's the goal - a mutual and shared respect. "
Trent Reznor talks about his recent social networks use, what he found difficult like trolls, ...
Faced with leaving the infrastructure of traditional record labels and figuring out what the right thing to do is in this new world - I found myself realizing that for me to have any concept of how to interact with the community and know what they might want / what they find appropriate, I need to immerse myself in that world and live it for a while.
Die Band Nine Inch Nails hat letztes Jahr den Webby für ihre innovative Webnutzung bekommen. Jetzt ist Frontsänger Trent Reznor total genervt von den Social Communies.
Nine Inch Nail's Trent Reznor explains (in a bit of a rambling rant) why he's quitting Twitter and why 'idiots rule'. Interesting take on social networking from the perspective of a celebrity.
I will be tuning out of the social networking sites because at the end of the day it's now doing more harm than good in the bigger picture and the experiment seems to have yielded a result. Idiots rule. ... With all of that said, I have business in the real world to attend to including wrapping up the live version of NIN, DOING some cool new shit and spending as much time as possible with the most amazing woman in the world. Nine Inch NailsのTrent Reznorの「残念なUSのWeb」発言である。
A nice rant from Trent Reznor :)
Have you read this? Trent speaks out about social media sites and how they're not worth the trouble.

The Sorry State Of Music Startups
http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/03/27/the-sorry-state-of-music-startups/
20090327 Online streaming music startups are in one very sorry place. On demand streaming rates range from .4 cents to 1 cent per stream - this is what the startups pay to the labels every time they play a song for a user. Add bandwidth and storage costs on top of that, which aren’t trivial for services that want to stream music quickly on demand. The result is hundreds of millions of dollars flowing from venture funds to startups to labels. Little of it makes its way to artists, and advertising revenues only cover a tiny portion of the fees.

The Tone Generation is Ian`s continuing radio series exploring electronic music; a personal selection drawn from his records and cds, looking at different themes and compositions in the era of analogue tape and early synthesizer technology. Within the limitations of his collection and the available time slot, the programmes will hopefully act as an entertaining and enlightening overview of electronic music as it developed in many different areas, and will be of special interest to enthusiasts and students studying the history of analogue electronics, from the formative days up to the 1970s.

Balkinization
http://balkin.blogspot.com/2010/06/copyright-elephant-in-middle-of-glee.html
Money quote: "The absence of any mention of copyright law in Glee illustrates a painful tension in American culture. While copyright holders assert that copyright violators are “stealing” their “property,” people everywhere are remixing and recreating artistic works for the very same reasons the Glee kids do — to learn about themselves, to become better musicians, to build relationships with friends, and to pay homage to the artists who came before them."
"The fictional high school chorus at the center of Fox’s Glee has a huge problem — nearly a million dollars in potential legal liability. For a show that regularly tackles thorny issues like teen pregnancy and alcohol abuse, it’s surprising that a million dollars worth of lawbreaking would go unmentioned." This is a very interesting look at the frequency with which this show (that I have never seen) addresses copyright issues without actually addressing copyright issues. And it's dead-on about the potential for a television show or other media of this popularity to effect social change in the realm of copyright perception.

RIAA Accounting: Why Even Major Label Musicians Rarely Make Money From Album Sales | Techdirt
http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20100712/23482610186.shtml
"We recently had a fun post about Hollywood accounting, about how the movie industry makes sure even big hit movies "lose money" on paper. So how about the recording industry? Well, they're pretty famous for doing something quite similar. Reader Jay pointed out in the comments an article from The Root that goes through who gets paid what for music sales, and the basic answer is not the musician. That report suggests that for every $1,000 sold, the average musician gets $23.40." Good article, rounds up and quotes some other famous ones too.
And that explains why huge megastars like Lyle Lovett have pointed out that he sold 4.6 million records and never made a dime from album sales. It's why the band 30 Seconds to Mars went platinum and sold 2 million records and never made a dime from album sales. You hear these stories quite often.
RIAA Accounting: Why Even Major Label Musicians Rarely Make Money From Album Sales | Techdirt
http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20100712/23482610186.shtml
In a traditional loan, you invest the money and pay back out of your proceeds. But a record label deal is nothing like that at all. They make you a "loan" and then take the first 63% of any dollar you make, get to automatically increase the size of the "loan" by simply adding in all sorts of crazy expenses (did the exec bring in pizza at the recording session? that gets added on), and then tries to get the loan repaid out of what meager pittance they've left for you.
