I wrote a Perl script to crawl through the Live Music Archive and make an XML file of all the streamable songs, and now I'm putting the information from the XML file into MySQL databases to populate this interface. I'm also tweaking the interface to make it look nice and neat. Dewey is named after the Dewey Decimal System because it organizes the Live Music Archive library in the same way that the Dewey Decimal System does. I understand that sifting through that many artists is a bit daunting if you don't know what you're looking for. I've added Genre tags that are pulled from Last.fm to help you find your style, and a search function to help you find exactly what you want. While I look into better options, and as the database grows, let me suggest that you use the "Concerts From Today" tab to narrow down your listening possibilities while browsing. I hope to be adding rating, tagging and commenting functionality soon.

TED: MIT Students Turn Internet Into a Sixth Human Sense -- Video | Epicenter from Wired.com
http://blog.wired.com/business/2009/02/ted-digital-six.html
In the tactile world, we use our five senses to take in information about our environment and respond to it, Maes explained. But a lot of the information that helps us understand and respond to the world doesn't come from these senses. Instead, it comes from computers and the internet. Maes' goal is to harness computers to feed us information in an organic fashion, like our existing senses. The prototype was built from an ordinary webcam and a battery-powered 3M projector, with an attached mirror -- all connected to an internet-enabled mobile phone. The setup, which costs less than $350, allows the user to project information from the phone onto any surface -- walls, the body of another person or even your hand.
Holy crap.

Cooper Journal: One free interaction
http://www.cooper.com/journal/2009/01/one_free_interaction.html
Yes! I think a free interaction gives the user experience that special edge.
"One free interaction" is a prospective design pattern that gives software and hardware a more humane feel. It exists outside of task flows and the concept of users as task-doers. Instead it sits in the "in between" spaces, suiting users as fidgeters, communicators, and people who play with things.
Very nice post from Chris Noessel of Cooper Design on the more subtle but no less brilliant elements of iPhone design, as well as other simple, pleasing software highlights
I flip page control on the home screen back and forth, for no apparent reason.
"Since we want our designs to be humane and, presuming they fulfill their utilitarian purposes well, emotionally satisfying, I suggest that designers begin to include one free interaction in their designs to enable the channeling of energy and simple expression."

Industry trends in prototyping Dave Cronin Cooper Get an e-mail update of new articles Comments (3) Created: 2 February 2009 User Level: All Products: Fireworks Prototype is one of those words that can mean something different to everyone. Before I get too far along in a discussion of prototyping, it's probably worth exploring what I'm talking about. In the world of designing interactive products and services, prototype is generally defined as some representation of a design idea. In the world of physical products, the term tends to connote something quite similar to the finished manufactured form. Indeed, industrial designers use the term model to describe what interaction designers think of as a prototype.

Mega Drop-Down Navigation Menus Work Well (Jakob Nielsen's Alertbox)
http://www.useit.com/alertbox/mega-dropdown-menus.html
Big, two-dimensional drop-down panels group navigation options to eliminate scrolling and use typography, icons, and tooltips to explain the user's choices.
Don't make response time too fast, though: the mouse should remain stationary for 0.5 seconds before you display anything that's hover-dependent, such as a mega drop-down or a tooltip. Violating this guideline will make the screen flicker insufferably when users move the mouse. Only after 0.5 seconds of resting the pointer on a navbar item can you assume that a user actually wants to see its associated drop-down. Thus, the timing should be: 1. Wait 0.5 seconds. 2. If the pointer is still hovering over a navbar item, display its mega drop-down within 0.1 seconds. 3. Keep showing it until the pointer has been outside both the navbar item and the drop-down for 0.5 seconds. Then, remove it in less than 0.1 seconds.
Summary: Big, two-dimensional drop-down panels group navigation options to eliminate scrolling and use typography, icons, and tooltips to explain the user's choices.
Big, 2-dimensional drop-down panels group navigation options to eliminate scrolling and use typography, icons, and tooltips to explain users' choices.

Applications of usability principles on a social network | creative briefing

As a result of this, social networks should - I say should because not every social network does this - put greater emphasis on usability over, say, a corporate website. Don’t get me wrong, usability is important everywhere you go on the web, but the nature of a social network’s operation makes usability especially important. This perspective guided my thinking during the redesign of the Daily Challenge beta 2.0 website. Many forks in the road were put to rest at the hands of basic usability principles that dictated righter from wronger (sometimes there was no strictly right or wrong answer). These are the principles that I want to share with you in the following case study of how usability can be applied to a social network

We’ve all seen arguments in the design community that dismiss the role of beauty in visual interfaces, insisting that good designers base their choices strictly on matters of branding or basic design principles. Lost in these discussions is an understanding of the powerful role aesthetics play in shaping how we come to know, feel, and respond.

http://www.graphpaper.com/2009/05-02_who_watches_the_watchman
Let’s say you own a big building full of valuable stuff. How do you make sure that the night watchman patrolling your factory floor or museum galleries after closing time actually makes his rounds? How do you know he’s inspecting every hallway, floor, and stairwell in the facility? How do you know he (or she) is not just spending every night sleeping at his desk? An elegant solution, designed and patented in 1901 by the German engineer A.A. Newman, is called the “watchclock”. It’s an ingenious mechanical device, slung over the shoulder like a canteen and powered by a simple wind-up spring mechanism. It precisely tracks and records a night watchman’s position in both space and time for the duration of every evening. It also generates a detailed, permanent, and verifiable record of each night’s patrol.
"But the watchclock is another kind of interaction design, one whose function corrals the user into a single, linear, constrained sort of behavior. The night watchman has a fundamental social constraint — the desire to not get fired from their job. This constraint allows the watchclock patrol system to work so effectively (some would say insidiously) as an interaction design instrument of control."
"How do you make sure that the night watchman patrolling your factory floor or museum galleries...actually makes his rounds? How do you know he’s inspecting every hallway, floor & stairwell? How do you know he is not just spending every night sleeping at his desk? If you’re a technology designer, you might suggest using surveillance cameras or even GPS to track his location each night, right? But let’s make this interesting...go...back...[to]1900. What could you possibly do in 1900 to be absolutely sure a night watchman was making his full patrol? An elegant solution, designed and patented in 1901 by the German engineer A.A. Newman, is called the “watchclock”. It’s an ingenious mechanical device, slung over the shoulder like a canteen and powered by a simple wind-up spring mechanism. It precisely tracks and records a night watchman’s position in both space and time for the duration of every evening. Evolution of Photoshop: 1988 - 2009 | Tools
http://www.hongkiat.com/blog/evolution-of-photoshop/
Adobe Photoshop has always been one of the greatest (if not the best) software when it comes to manipulating and editing image. It all started off in 1987 with a Mac application call Display, created by Thomas Knoll. With almost two decades worth of changes and improvements, you almost can’t imagine how the first version of Photoshop would look like by looking at the Photoshop you have on your desktop. In this post, we attempt to bring you back in time to look at how the very first Photoshop look like, then we scan through each evolution of Photoshop to the latest Adobe Photoshop CS4 in market today. Modal Windows In Modern Web Design | Design Showcase | Smashing Magazine
http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2009/05/27/modal-windows-in-modern-web-design/
he modal window has many advantages. For example, when a modal window contains a smaller element, the user doesn’t need to load an entirely new page just to access it (another way to achieve the same effect is e.g. by using AJAX-based tabs). By providing modal windows, you improve the usability of your website. Having to load pages over and over will annoy most users, so avoiding that is definitely a good thing. Modal windows also allow you to save space by getting rid of large elements that don’t need to be on the main page. For example, rather than putting a full video on a page, you can just provide a link, thumbnail or button of some sort. In this article, we’ll go over best practices and trends for working with and building modal windows. We’ll also provide numerous examples of well-constructed modal windows and a few scripts to get you started with building them.

9 Crucial UI Features of Social Media and Networking Sites | How-To | Smashing Magazine

The main function of a good user interface is to provide users with an intuitive mapping between user’s intention and application’s function that manages to provide a solution to the given task. Basically, user interface describes the way people interact with a site and the way users can access its functions. In fact, usability is a biproduct of a good user interface and it determines how easily a user can perform all of the functions provided by the site. Usability is a crucial part of every design, especially on websites with a large amount of functions and users.

Elements of Great Web Design: The Polish - Psdtuts+ - http://psd.tutsplus.com/tutorials/designing-tutorials/elements-of-great-web-design-the-polish/
When I put together designs, I usually do so in two phases - Layout and Polish. During the layout phase, I place the main objects on the page usually finishing with something that looks relatively complete. In the second stage - the Polish - I go over the design and adjust colors, type treatments, shadows, layers, and generally clean it all up. In this first of a series of tutorials on web design, we'll be looking at the Polish.

Konigi is about shared knowledge and influence. We may monitor innovative designers and the sites of influence that have paved the way for the practices we engage in as user experience and visual designers. In a way, it allows us to remain competitive to know what others are up to, but that awareness alone can be a double-edged sword.

Along with Apple’s official release of the new iPhone 3.0 software came a number of new graphic elements. We’ve been holding off updating the Photoshop file until we could properly implement the additions. We built it using vectors, so it’s all still fully editable. Apple’s SDK is amazing, but when we need to mock up something quickly for a pitch we turn to this. Some of the changes and additions in the 3.0 PSD include: • Map and map elements including curl • Copy and paste elements • Timeline bar editor • Horizontal iPhone • Horizontal Panels bars and keyboards

This is a 20-minute talk I gave at the Web2.0 Expo in San Francisco a couple weeks ago. In it, I describe two trends: how we're shifting as a culture from consumers to participants, and how technology has enabled massive amounts of data to be recorded, stored, and analyzed. Putting those things together has resulted in some fascinating innovations that echo data visualization work that's been happening for centuries.

QuickFlip is a jQuery plugin I wrote that uses a CSS trick to cause a div, paragraph or any other piece of HTML markup to flip like a card. With a result similar to the UI animation on the iPhone, this jQuery plugin is easily integrated into your webpage to make any portion appear to flip and show its back.

Designing Convertbot - Tapbots Blog
http://tapbots.com/blog/design/designing-convertbot
With the surprising success of Weightbot, it was only a matter of time before we would take on the challenge of outdoing ourselves. We knew people were expecting something big from Tapbots the second time around so what’s more impressive on the iPhone platform than a unit converter? Pretty much anything. In name alone, Convertbot is probably the last application people would expect to see from us. But the truth is, converting units, while extremely ordinary, is a very useful utility for many people. And while there are countless feature-rich unit converters for the iPhone, none of them make the task any more enjoyable. So it really was the perfect robot for us to build. I just wanted to spend a little time writing about how Convertbot came to be. Getting Started The first step was to set up the groundwork for the application. What is the primary purpose of this application? Who is the target audience? What are the bare minimum features this app needs and what features can we add that

Designing and building a successful social website or application is no mean feat. Adding a social dimension to an existing experience is trickier still. Nevertheless, the skills to do so are well worth cultivating, as the ubiquitous, pervasive, massively interconnected world of the Internet and allied digital networks, such as mobile SMS (short message service) connections, have unlocked a growing panoply of opportunities for social relationships, remote presence, real-time interactions and the capacity for self-organized groups of people to coordinate their behavior and collaborate on changing the world.

nterface complexity is an issue every designer wrestles with when designing a reasonably sophisticated application. A complex interface can reduce user effectiveness, increase the learning curve of the application, and cause users to feel intimidated and overwhelmed. I’ve spent the past year redesigning a particularly complex application with my primary focus being on reducing complexity. In this article, I’ll go over some of the issues surrounding complexity and techniques that can be used to manage it.

Conventional contact lenses are polymers formed in specific shapes to correct faulty vision. To turn such a lens into a functional system, we integrate control circuits, communication circuits, and miniature antennas into the lens using custom-built optoelectronic components. Those components will eventually include hundreds of LEDs, which will form images in front of the eye, such as words, charts, and photographs. Much of the hardware is semitransparent so that wearers can navigate their surroundings without crashing into them or becoming disoriented. In all likelihood, a separate, portable device will relay displayable information to the lens’s control circuit, which will operate the optoelectronics in the lens.

Do you suspect a programmer may have put together the terrible user interface on that “enterprise” software you’re forced to use every day? There are some give-away indicators. Look out for them in your software, hunt down the developer and force them to read a book about user interface design. If you’re suitably senior, force them to a) improve it, or even better b) get someone with real UI experience to fix it.

Recently, Office Depot redesigned their search user interface, adding attribute-based filtering and creating a more dynamic, interactive user experience. Unfortunately, Office Depot’s interaction design misses some key points, making their new search user interface less usable and, therefore, less effective. That’s the bad news. The good news is that the Office Depot site presents us with an excellent case study for demonstrating some of the important best practices for designing filters for faceted search results, as follows:

Seriously, how many date formats am I going to have to try before I get this sucker right? Do I need to phone a friend? The lack of strong error messaging is a regular issue I encounter as both a user and UX designer. Best Practices for 6 Common User Interface Elements | Webdesigner Depot
http://www.webdesignerdepot.com/2009/11/best-practices-for-6-common-user-interface-elements/
The appearance and usability of certain interface elements and functionality are crucial to the success any websites in today’s market. Studies have demonstrated that even a split-second delay in thinking on the user’s part will weaken their perception and interest in a website and ultimately lower the website’s conversion rate. In certain niches and industries, having UI elements that are not obvious in their use may be perfectly acceptable. The blogging and web development industry are perfect examples. But when we design user interfaces for non-tech-savvy audiences—which is usually the case with client work—we have to ensure that certain UI elements do not stray too far from what users are accustomed to. This article discusses some best practices and usability traits of six user interface elements and the conventions for each, so that developers can create user experiences that are both beautiful and simple.

A few myths and misconceptions about grids exist in the design community that can be detrimental, especially to designers who are new to the subject. I recently read an article, which is no longer online, claiming that grids have disadvantages and it listed the reasons why. As you can guess, I very much disagreed with the entire article and felt that it was providing a lot of bad information on grid systems. All of the listed “disadvantages” were distortions derived from the lack of understanding on how a grid works and functions. In response to that article, here’s my attempt at clearing up this mess. Grids are a design trend. Grids have been in use long before graphic design became a discipline. During the 13th– and 14th-centuries, scribes used the Villard Diagram to organize their handwritten manuscripts. In the 15th-century, Gutenberg and others divided their pages using the Van de Graaf canon. The use of a grid is not a trend, it’s a fundamental skill that designers should pos

The 7 signs your UI was created by a programmer
http://www2.voyce.com/index.php/2009/09/14/the-7-signs-your-ui-was-created-by-a-programmer/
“Are you sure you don’t want to lose your changes?” Err… what? No. I mean YES. Oh sh*t.
Ian Voyce, 2009-09-14
The 7 signs your UI was created by a programmer. Not really fair on programmers, but fun nonetheless.

Adding Depth with Pixel Perfect Line Work | Web Design Ledger
http://webdesignledger.com/tips/adding-depth-with-pixel-perfect-line-work
A pixel is a single point in a raster image
So how can one lone pixel have an impact on a web design? It probably can’t. However, if you extend that pixel in one direction, it becomes a line, and in the hands of a masterful designer with an attention for subtle detail, the 1px line is a powerful design element. It can be used in many different ways, but in this article we’re going to take a look at how pixel perfect line work can add depth to a design.

Some of their money might go towards search engine optimization and some might go towards pay per click or search engine marketing. Little do they know their problem might not be about getting more traffic. The real problem could be that they have a poor call to action.

As technologists we ask, Can visualization help people think collectively? Can visualization move beyond numbers into the realm of words and images? As artists we seek the joy of revelation. Can visualization tell never-before-told stories? Can it uncover truths about color, memory, and sensuality?

The Apple Tablet Interface Must Be Like This - apple tablet - Gizmodo
http://gizmodo.com/5452501/the-apple-tablet-interface-must-be-like-this
Some people want the Apple Tablet to run Mac OS X's user interface. Others think its UI will be something exotic. Both camps are wrong: The iPhone started a UI revolution, and the tablet is just step two. Here's why.
Interesting guess at how the Apple tablet UI might be designed.
Pen v keyboard v Newton v Graffiti v Treo v iPhone (Phil Gyford’s website)
http://www.gyford.com/phil/writing/2010/01/18/input.php
For some time I’ve been meaning to test my small collection of PDA/smartphone gadgets to see which of their methods of input was quickest. The iPhone’s software keyboard? The Newton’s handwriting recognition? Palm’s Graffiti? With the possible imminent arrival of a tablet from Apple that will save the world, it seemed a good time to get round to the test.
Phil Gyford tested a small collection of PDA and smartphone gadgets to see which of their methods of input was quickest. He tested six input method: Apple Newton handwriting recognition (1997); Palm Vx Graffiti (1999); Palm Treo 650’s hardware QWERTY keyboard (2004); Apple iPhone 3G’s software QWERTY keyboard (2009); old-fashioned Pen & Paper; a full-size QWERTY keyboard. He copied out 200 plus words. And he did it twice for each input. The results were surprising. Palm Graffiti was surprisingly slow. Handwriting was surprisingly slow. The iPhone soft keyboard was surprisingly fast.

Sehr schöne kleine Statistik. Das iPhone gewinnt nach der QWERTZ Tastatur und vor der Handschrift.
60 Sites with Attractive Typographical Introductions
http://sixrevisions.com/design-showcase-inspiration/60-sites-with-attractive-typographical-introductions/
Typography is a beautiful element that magnifies a website’s creativity. The stunning letterforms and positions of the fonts can be moving and inspiring. Effective use of typography can also be combined grid placement, and allows users to better understand what it is you’re trying to get across. In recent times, we’ve seen our share of websites with beautiful introductions that are purely text-based. This sort of headlining allows you to read and comprehend words on a visual level. They are a great form of art that, if done correctly, will affect the minds and emotions of your visitors.

Sikuli is a visual technology to search and automate graphical user interfaces (GUI) using images (screenshots). The first release of Sikuli contains Sikuli Script, a visual scripting API for Jython, and Sikuli IDE, an integrated development environment for writing visual scripts with screenshots easily. Sikuli Script automates anything you see on the screen without internal API's support. You can programmatically control a web page, a desktop application running on Windows/Linux/Mac OS X, or even an iphone application running in an emulator.

Refining Data Tables :: UXmatters

After forms, data tables are likely the next most ubiquitous interface element designers create when constructing Web applications. Users often need to add, edit, delete, search for, and browse through lists of people, places, or things within Web applications. As a result, the design of tables plays a crucial role in such an application’s overall usefulness and usability.

At the same time, they are particularly low-cost, and easy to put to use."

Imagine if every interface was open source. Any of us could modify the software we use every day. Unfortunately, we don't have the source. Prefab realizes this vision using only the pixels of everyday interfaces. This video shows using Prefab to add new functionality to Adobe Photoshop, Apple iTunes, and Microsoft Windows Media Player. Prefab represents a new approach to deploying HCI research in everyday software, and is also the first step toward a future where anybody can modify any interface.

Writing Decisions: Saving space without losing meaning - (37signals)

The first thing I do when I want to cut out some words is not read the original version. I just write a new one.

iA » Designing for iPad: Reality Check
http://informationarchitects.jp/designing-for-ipad-reality-check/
With its high pitched light contrast, iPad is a miracle picture book or photo frame—but it (still) doesn’t replace printed matters. If, executed carefully, text on an iPad comes quite close, but it needs a lot of care and specific screen typographic know-how. Web body text sizes (14-16px) feel kind of small on iPad while bigger sizes clash with the canvas dimensions. This leads to all sorts of basic grid restrictions. iPad’s resolution is higher than a regular LCD but still lower than an iPhone which gives the pixel type an unusual “in between” feel.
when you write a text it doesn’t count words but the right column tells you: how much time someone spend to read your text until the cursor position (top number) the total reading time (bottom number)

Macintosh: 25 Years (Jakob Nielsen's Alertbox)

25 godina GUI interfejsa
The Macintosh was introduced January 24, 1984. In fact, the Mac was originally manufactured in the Fremont, California building that now houses Nielsen Norman Group.... Summary: Although its individual features weren't new, the Mac offered integration, the expectation of a GUI, and interface consistency.
"Although its individual features weren't new, the Mac offered integration, the expectation of a GUI, and interface consistency. " Nielsen kommenterer hva Mac har betydd for utviklingen av GUI, og hvor iPhone bør ta oss nå.
He points to "usability" as the great triumph of the Mac. Not only is the platform more successful than ever, but the computing world wouldn't even resemble the one we know without it.

Utilizing the theory of electrostatics, we have designed a low-cost human-computer interface device that has the ability to track the position of a user's hand in three dimensions. Physical contact is not required and the user does not need to hold a controller or attach markers to their body. To control the device, the user simply waves their hand above it in the air.

Emotional Interface Design: The Gateway to Passionate Users
We’re changing. Our relationships online and in real life are shifting as we become more public with our private lives. Online social networks have helped our real world social networks transcend time and space making it easy (and seemingly essential) to share the triumphs, tragedies, and trite moments of life. No longer do you simply tell your best friend that you’ve broken up with your boyfriend. It feels natural to many people to tell hundreds of Twitter followers, and Facebook friends. No matter how you feel about the appropriateness of over sharing, the shift towards a public private life is changing our expectations of the relationships we create online. Remember the websites of the late 1990’s and early 2000’s that used formal language to create a professional, guarded persona and brand? The trend was towards the serious, because it seemed like you couldn’t land clients or entice new users if you weren’t stuffy.

Web usability guru Jakob Nielsen thinks your innovative iPad UI is too "weird." I think he should, just maybe, stop worrying about a "back" button.
"iPad apps are inconsistent and have low feature discoverability, with frequent user errors due to accidental gestures. An overly strong print metaphor and weird interaction styles cause further usability problems. "

Is This Really The Future of Magazines or Why Didn’t They Just Use HTML 5?
http://interfacelab.com/is-this-really-the-future-of-magazines-or-why-didnt-they-just-use-html-5
So why didn’t they choose HTML5 and build a custom viewer application around WebKit?
I just downloaded the Wired iPad application, and like most iPad applications (and most magazines for that matter), I found myself bored with it within the first 20 minutes. I’m sure the content is engaging, I’m sure the articles are worth reading – but I am stumped as to why I would chose this over the physical magazine itself, or their website for that matter. In fact, for reasons I’ll get into below, I’m starting to believe that the physical magazine’s “interface” is vastly superior to it’s iPad cousin. However, what strikes me most about the Wired app is how amazingly similar it is to a multimedia CD-ROM from the 1990’s. This is not a compliment and actually turns out to be a fairly large problem… 1990’s Here We Come … Again
at you can’t do application specific
A really good take on how iPad is not really delivering "Value" with their iPad magazines..

Annotated link http://www.diigo.com/bookmark/http://ignorethecode.net/blog/2010/05/25/gestures
Way back when, computers used to only have command line interfaces. To get a PC to do anything at all, people had to memorize commands, and type them in correctly. But forcing people to memorize commands is not particularly user friendly. As a result, few people knew how to use computers, or wanted to learn. When graphical user interfaces became popular, people didn’t have to memorize commands anymore. Instead, everything they could do was shown on their screen. «Memorizing» was replaced with «recognizing». No longer did people have to memorize «cp» if they wanted to duplicate a file; they just had to look through the «File» menu and recognize the «Duplicate» command.
"In a way, gestural user interfaces are a step back, a throwback to the command line. Gestures are often not obvious and hard to discover; the user interface doesn’t tell you what you can do with an object. Instead, you have to remember which gestures you can use, the same way you had to remember the commands you could use in a command line interface."
