Geekdad from Wired.comLarry Osterman's WebLog : Why is the DOS path character "\"?
And how DOS builders added secret support to make it more like unix.
Why \ was used for paths in DOS.
The reason why DOS (and subsequently Windows) went with the backslash character to convey path information, instead of UNIX's forward-slash.
Why is there a "\" key on the keyboard in the first place? As far as I know, they aren't used in English grammar, and to this day, most common users don't know which is "back" and which is "forward."
Thanks Reddit! If you've ever wondered why all the paths on Windows machines are wrong, why the escape character on Windows is "^" and so on, please read this little piece. The Teenager Audio Test - Can you hear this sound?

With the massive exodus towards online publishing, many people hardly reach for the newspaper these days. If there’s one thing I truly miss from the newspaper, it would be reading the comic strips. I figured that we’re so immersed in the Internet that it would be cool to compile a list of funny strips related to web design, the Internet and of course blogging. This is a virtual tour of the arcade section of the "Collection of the King of Pop", the Michael Jackson Exhibition held on April 19-25, 2009. It should be noted that these interactive panoramas were not taken at the Neverland Ranch; rather they were lensed at the Beverly Hills display area of the auction site. On December 10 2008 Julien's Auctions announced the sale of over 2000 pieces of Michael Jackson memorabilia. Jackson had contracted with the auction house to removed the items from the foreclosed Neverland Ranch. It took 30 men and 10 semi-trucks over 3 months to remove the items from Neverland. Subsequently, Jackson had a change of heart and on March 4th sued Julien's to prevent the sale of his property. The Los Angeles Superior Court ruled in April 3rd that the sale could go on, but in a settlement announced on April 14th the auction was cancelled and converted into a twelve day public exhibition of the collection after which it was returned to Jackson.100 Essential Skills for Geeks | GeekDad | Wired.com

So... At the end of the day, what do I think? I like Go, but I don't love it. If it had generics, it would definitely be my favorite of the C/C /C#/Java family. It's got a very elegant simplicity to it which I really like. The interface type system is wonderful. The overall structure of programs and modules is excellent. But it's got some ugliness. Some of the ugliness is fixable, and some of it isn't. On balance, I think it's a really good language, but it could have been a lot better. It's not going to wipe C off the face of the earth. But I think it will establish itself as a solid alternative. And hopefully, over time, they'll fix some of the worst parts of the ugliness, without sacrificing the beauty or simplicity of the language. Annotated link http://www.diigo.com/bookmark/http%3A%2F%2Fscienceblogs.com%2Fgoodmath%2F2009%2F11%2Fgoogles_new_language_go.php
"The most innovative thing about it is its type system. There are two kinds of types in Go: concrete types, and interface types. Concrete types are exactly what you're used to from most programming languages. Interface types are similar to interface types in languages like Java, with one huge exception: you don't need to declare what interface types you implement! An interface is a specification of what methods a type must provide to be used in some context. Anything which implements those methods implements the interface. Even if the interface was defined later than a type, in a different module, compiled separately, if the object implements the methods named in the interface, then it implements the interface." -- This is nice and all, but I (still) don't understand why this isn't just "abstract data types implemented in a language people might use." Didn't Barbara Liskov *just* win a Turing Award for this? Isn't this idea 30+ years old? (Yes, it is.)

The term ‘geek’, once used to label a circus freak, has morphed in meaning over the years. What was once an unusual profession transferred into a word indicating social awkwardness. As time has gone on, the word has yet again morphed to indicate a new type of individual: someone who is obsessive over one (or more) particular subjects, whether it be science, photography, electronics, computers, media, or any other field. A geek is one who isn’t satisfied knowing only the surface facts, but instead has a visceral desire to learn everything possible about a particular subject.PhotoSketch picture software wins plaudits - Telegraph

for fools like meLike, Python
I'd like a ORLY dialect. kthxbye.
Like, Python was created by Jonathan Howard in February 2010 while drinking and reviewing code for an upcoming project with a coworker. At a certain point, higher-level explanations devolved into just flat-out reading Python code like they were actually speaking the language normally - complete with like's, um's, whatever's, etc - making it completely impractical/awesome for work. It was then that Jonathan realized he should perhaps stop for the night. And START creating Like, Python. e.g. ok so like name = raw_input("yo! what's your name?" ) right if name.strip() is actually like "": toootally just exit() else: um yeah print like "Hi %s, nice to meet you." % name
"It's about time programming languages understood what the kids are typing these days. So let's start with a baby step in that direction: Like, Python."Very off topic: Why I won't be at my high school reunion : Good Math, Bad Math
Now it's twenty five years since I got out of that miserable fucking hell-hole. And people from my high school class are suddenly getting in touch, sending me email, trying to friend me on Facebook, and trying to convince me to bring my family to the reunion. (It's a picnic reunion, full family invited.) Even some of the people who used to beat the crap out of me on a regular basis are getting in touch as if we're old friends. My reaction to them... What the fuck is wrong with you people? Why would you think that I would want to have anything to do with you? How do you have the chutzpah to act as if we're old friends? How dare you? I see the RSVP list that one of you sent me, and I literally feel nauseous just remembering your names.

No, really. It's true. The Onion wouldn't lie about these matters.
"The president seems to be someplace else lately," said one high-level official, speaking on condition of anonymity. "Yesterday we were all being briefed on the encroachment of Iranian drone planes into Iraq, when he just looked up from the table and blurted out, 'What am I supposed to watch on Fridays at 10 p.m. now? Numb3rs?'" "I haven't seen him this upset since Admiral Adama realized that Earth was actually an uninhabitable wasteland," the official continued . . .
Obama watched the finale just as he had every previous episode, alone in the White House screening room with the volume turned all the way up.

It's 1996, and you're bored. What do you do? If you're one of the lucky people with an AOL account, you probably do the same thing you'd do in 2009: Go online. You check your mail, then spend a few minutes chatting with your AOL buddies about which of you has the funniest screen name (you win, pimpodayear94).QDB: Quote #152037
I discovered that you'd never get an answer to a problem from Linux Gurus by asking. You have to troll in order for someone to help you with a Linux problem. <dm> For example, I didn't know how to find files by contents and the man pages were way too confusing. What did I do? I knew from experience that if I just asked, I'd be told to read the man pages even though it was too hard for me. <dm> Instead, I did what works. Trolling. By stating that Linux sucked because it was so hard to find a file compared to Windows, I got every self-described Linux Guru around the world coming to my aid. They gave me examples after examples of different ways to do it. All this in order to prove to everyone that Linux was better.

Let me tell you about this cool new web server. I figured out how to merge the ZeroMQ event polling system with the libtask coroutine library so that you can use libtask to handle tons of TCP/UDP and ZeroMQ sockets in a single thread. I then took this very cool hack, and started building a web server using my Mongrel HTTP parser, but I modified the parser so that the same server on the same port can handle HTTP or Flash XMLSockets transparently. The next step is to get this server to route HTTP and XMLSocket JSON messages to arbitrary ZeroMQ backends. I was inspired by this so much that I registered utu.im and may try to bring it back. Not sure how or when though.Super Heroes vs. the Westboro Baptist Church - ComicsAlliance | Comics culture, news, humor, commentary, and reviews
