Most programmers are not just desktop programmers, web programmers or scripting gurus - they are often all of the above. Over time, most software developers find that it’s much easier to re-use code components than it is to recreate the wheel every time you write an application. Over time, these developers typically archive a library of these reusable modules in order to save time the next time they need to do the same task.
What I've Learned from Hacker News
http://www.paulgraham.com/hackernews.html
The key to performance is elegance, not battalions of special cases
Probably the most important thing I've learned about dilution is that it's measured more in behavior than users. It's bad behavior you want to keep out more than bad people. User behavior turns out to be surprisingly malleable. If people are expected to behave well, they tend to; and vice versa.

Rands In Repose: A Twitter Decision
http://www.randsinrepose.com/archives/2009/02/09/a_twitter_decision.html
In starting a significant project, an engineer knows the first three big design decisions you make are vastly more important than the second three. The nature of these decisions varies from project to project. They may be choices about look and feel, rules about architecture, or trade offs regarding feature set. Whatever these decisions are, they set a tone that defines the success of the project. When I look at Twitter, I see three early essential decisions about how Twitter allows you to craft a community. I believe much of Twitter’s continued success is due to definition and execution of these decisions. Interestingly, some obvious candidates for the Top 3, like “Scales like crazy”, “Will generate money”, and “Needs to be searchable” weren’t initially there.
For me, a tweet is still a note I tie to a balloon, which I let go and think, “Who is going to read that one?” Sometimes I look and see where it ended up, sometimes I don’t.
For me, Twitter remains a place for casual information. For me, a tweet is still a note I tie to a balloon, which I let go and think, “Who is going to read that one?” Sometimes I look and see where it ended up, sometimes I don’t.

The size of social networks | Primates on Facebook | The Economist

"What also struck Dr Marlow, however, was that the number of people on an individual’s friend list with whom he (or she) frequently interacts is remarkably small and stable. The more “active” or intimate the interaction, the smaller and more stable the group."
Here's The Economist article on FB. The best quote: ...people who are members of online social networks are not so much “networking” as they are "broadcasting their lives to an outer tier of acquaintances who aren’t necessarily inside the Dunbar circle,” says Lee Rainie, the director of the Pew Internet & American Life Project.

Three things you need if you want more customers Seth Godin I går, 12:26 PM If you want to grow, you need new customers. And if you want new customers, you need three things: 1. A group of possible customers you can identify and reach. 2. A group with a problem they want to solve using your solution. 3. A group with the desire and ability to spend money to solve that problem.
You'd be amazed at how often new businesses or new ventures have none of these. The first one is critical, because if you don't have permission, or knowledge, or word of mouth, you're invisible.

But what about a site's physical appearance? Does the aesthetic appearance of a blog affect what's written by the site's commenters? My sense is that the establishment of social norms through moderation, both by site owners and by the community itself, has much more of an impact on the behavior of commenters than the visual design of a site but aesthetics does factor in somewhat. Perhaps the poor application of a default MT or Wordpress template signals a lack of care or attention on the part of the blog's owner, leading readers to think they can get away with something. Poorly designed advertising or too many ads littered about a site could result in readers feeling disrespected and less likely to participate civilly or respond to moderation. Messageboard software is routinely ugly; does that contribute to the often uncivil tone found on web forums?

A great article from ALA on how to cultivate an active membership base
A key to running successful "social networking sites" is to remember that they're just communities. All communities, online or off, have one thing in common: members want to belong—to feel like part of something larger than themselves. Communicating effectively, setting clear and specific expectations, mentoring contributors, playing with trends, offering rewards, and praising liberally (but not excessively) can harness your members' innate desires—and nurture great content in the process.

"In our society there's a real dearth of community," Altman says. "The internet is a way for people to key in to that need, but it's so inadequate. [At hacker spaces], people get a little taste of that community and they just want more."
At the center of this community are hacker spaces like Noisebridge, where like-minded geeks gather to work on personal projects, learn from each other and hang out in a nerd-friendly atmosphere. Subtraction.com: Dear Designer, You Suck
http://www.subtraction.com/2009/04/09/dear-designer-you-suck
A friend of mine who happens to be a famous designer (this person shall remain nameless) said something not long ago about one of my projects that really pissed me off. At the time, I objected to this person’s tone and delivery, thinking it inappropriate. After all, we’re friends! But given some distance from the event, I realize now that, the formal qualities of the remarks aside, this person had a point. They weren’t necessarily right, mind you, but there was a legitimate criticism at the core, to which I should have paid attention. In retrospect I realize that getting hot and bothered about this person’s tone said something much less flattering about me than about the person.

cool story about web community and instant media gone horribly wrong; see also griefers
"It's obvious Amazon has some sort of automatic mechanism that marks a book as "adult" after too many people have complained about it. It's also obvious that there aren't too many people using this feature, as indicated by the easy availability (& search ranking) of pornography & sex toys & other seemingly "objectionable" materials, otherwise almost all of those items would have been flagged by this point. So somebody is going around & very deliberately flagging only LGBT(QQI)/feminist/survivor content on Amazon until it is unranked & becomes much more difficult to find. To the outside world, this looks like deliberate censorship on the part of Amazon, since Amazon operates the web application in question. To me, this looks like one of two things: 1. Some "Family"-type organization astroturfing Amazon in an attempt to rid the world of EVIL PRO-HOMOSEXUAL FILTH!! 2. Bantown ... a tactic for inciting meta-lulz on multiple levels through the alignment of third-parties against each other"
Amazonfail theory about it being a "glitch." I call bullshit, though.
Bantown is a tactic for inciting meta-lulz on multiple levels through the alignment of third-parties against each other. Bantown is like the plot of most James Bond movies, wherein some nefarious evildoer brings the US and the Soviets close to war. Bantown is a trolling technique of the highest order, which usually pits communities against each other, or communities against companies, or organizations against companies, or companies against organizations

Twitter Quitters Just Don't Get It - Business Center - PC World

News of Twitter's low user retention rate is hardly shocking, and those of us who've stuck with it aren't likely to miss those who don't.
"But eventually, for most of us anyway, it dawns on us that Twitter is a lot more than a worldwide stream of trivial, self-promotional text bombs. And when that happens, we begin to see the beauty in Twitter's simple, terse messaging system. Used in conjunction with a good client app like TweetDeck, Twitter becomes an active massively multi-user conversation to rival any other social medium. " Depends on the kind of conversation you want, I guess; I'm still mainly in the "don't get it" camp.

10 Corporate Twitter Accounts Worth Following - Reviews by PC Magazine
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2341886,00.asp
Twitter isn't just about finding out about plane crashes and what your best friend ate for lunch. Its uses are evolving, and big corporations are joining the fun. Some corporate accounts serve as a boring PR tool that spews press releases and follows everyone who tweets about their company. But others have found interesting, inventive ways to engage customers on Twitter. Some corporations, namely @Palm_Inc and @WholeFoods, have used the service to release news and answer questions. Others, such as @DellOutlet and @MotoDeals, have become a hot place to go to find great deals on merchandise. And not to be outdone, companies like @ComcastCares, and @HRBlock, have used Twitter as a new extension to customer service, allowing near real-time responses to difficult questions. We've compiled a list of 10 corporate Twitter accounts that can either help you in a jam or allow you to give instant product and service feedback to someone who will actually get the message. @Palm_Inc 1. @Palm_Inc –

A List Apart: Articles: The Wisdom of Community
http://www.alistapart.com/articles/the-wisdom-of-community/
It’s one of the most important concepts on the web today—perhaps the most important for social media—but it’s one of the least understood. When James Surowiecki wrote The Wisdom of Crowds in 2004, he explored the stock market and other classic social psychology examples, but “web 2.0” was still nascent. It’s time to connect his ideas to the social web, where they can reach their full potential. The Wisdom of Crowds (WOC) theory does not mean that people are smart in groups—they’re not. Anyone who’s seen an angry mob knows it. But crowds, presented with the right challenge and the right interface, can be wise. When it works, the crowd is wiser, in fact, than any single participant. The standard example is this: Imagine you have a jar of pennies. Ask a few hundred people how many there are inside. When you tally the results, chances are, all the guesses will be wrong. But if you average all the answers, the result will be almost perfect, almost all the time. The web, with its low barr

The frantic global rush to connect everyone to everyone, all the time, is quietly giving rise to a revised version of socialism. Communal aspects of digital culture run deep and wide. Wikipedia is just one remarkable example of an emerging collectivism—and not just Wikipedia but wikiness at large.

"Dear Old People Who Run the World, My generation would like to break up with you. Everyday, I see a widening gap in how you and we understand the world — and what we want from it. I think we have irreconcilable differences. ... What do the "M"s in Generation M stand for? The first is for a movement. It's a little bit about age — but mostly about a growing number of people who are acting very differently. They are doing meaningful stuff that matters the most. Those are the second, third, and fourth "M"s. Gen M is about passion, responsibility, authenticity, and challenging yesterday's way of everything. Everywhere I look, I see an explosion of Gen M businesses, NGOs, open-source communities, local initiatives, government."

Welcome to the Awesome Foundation for Arts and Sciences We support people doing awesome things in the world. Every month we give out a grant. Information on how to submit follows. What is Awesome? Awesomeness is often overlooked by mainstream culture, which tends to rehash the same broadly appealing but mediocre creations. Thankfully, there is the web. Awesomeness is more the product of a creator’s passion than the prospect of audience or profit. Awesome creations are novel and non-obvious, evoking surprise and delight. Invariably, something about them perfectly reflects the essence of the medium, moment, or method of creation. Awesomeness challenges and inspires.

As more diverse organizations dive into web marketing, for-profit organizations can learn well from their indie counterparts about experimentation and innovation online. A few notable community and arts groups have been inventive in their use of social media and truly collaborative in their outreach in ways that even the most seasoned corporate marketer can appreciate. Among the arts and community organizations using social media thoughtfully and in big ways (which aren’t necessarily representative of their limited budgets) are independent artists and companies in photography, film, modern art, radio and craft. They’ve capitalized on the audiovisual nature of the Web to showcase the storytelling and community-building aspects of their work, and the results are worth a pass-along.

Designing and building a successful social website or application is no mean feat. Adding a social dimension to an existing experience is trickier still. Nevertheless, the skills to do so are well worth cultivating, as the ubiquitous, pervasive, massively interconnected world of the Internet and allied digital networks, such as mobile SMS (short message service) connections, have unlocked a growing panoply of opportunities for social relationships, remote presence, real-time interactions and the capacity for self-organized groups of people to coordinate their behavior and collaborate on changing the world.

Future of PR: When Agencies Represent Communities –Not Brands
http://www.web-strategist.com/blog/2009/03/29/future-of-pr-when-agencies-represent-communities-not-brands/
From Web Strategy by Jeremiah Owyang
Future of PR? When agencies represent communities, not brands: http://twurl.nl/p1js6t [from http://twitter.com/markivey/statuses/1418258374]
With communities in the driver seat over product, a shift will happen as communities can define the spec of future products and therefore multiple brands will bid for their business. As a result, we should expect the agency model to flip over, where PR agencies start to represent communities of customers –rather than brands.
Communities will continue to gain more and more power as they lean on each other to make decisions, support each other, and share their lifestyle. What happens to agencies that traditionally serve brands? With communities in the driver seat over product, a shift will happen as communities can define the spec of future products and therefore multiple brands will bid for their business. As a result, we should expect the agency model to flip over, where PR agencies start to represent communities of customers –rather than brands.

Social Media ROI: Dell's $3m on Twitter and Four Better Examples

Dell revenues from Twitter surpass $3m Ebay found in 2006 that participants in online communities spend 54% more than non-community users.
Telling your reluctant boss that social media is worth using because Dell made $3 million on Twitter, however, runs the risk of encouraging e-commerce broadcast as the model for engagement in conversation. Other, more conversational, examples of ROI make important additions to conversations about Dell and social media. (They also concern a lot more money.)

A small crowd is still a crowd.

The Three Spheres of Web Strategy –Updated for 2009 « Web Strategy by Jeremiah Owyang | Social Media, Web Marketing
http://www.web-strategist.com/blog/2009/09/14/the-three-spheres-of-web-strategy-updated-for-2009/
The core structure of the goals and challenges of a Web Strategist
Who’s a Web Strategist? In a company, they often are responsible for the long term vision of corporate web properties. At a web company where their product is on the web, they’re often the product manager or CTO. Regardless of role, the responsibilities are the same, they need to balance all three of these spheres, and make sure their efforts are in the middle of all three.
I hope this is one of those resources you print out pin to your desk, and share with others. This is the core theme of this blog, the balance needed for successful web endeavors in organizations. I originally posted this diagram in 2006, the

Full Circle Associates » How I use social media
http://www.fullcirc.com/wp/2009/08/04/how-i-use-social-media/
More goodness from Nancy White, who is probably one of the most adept users of social media out there. "When the door to connection is open, watch who walks through and follow them, not those who stand at the doorway and naysay! And I'm not just talking about social media early adopters. I'm talking about people passionate about getting something done." That shouldn't (I would say) be taken as an endorsement of a non-critical stance. But if someone naysays, they ought to at least have ventured into the technology (and its community) to have some grounds for their criticism. Nancy White, Full Circle Associates, August 5, 2009.

ommunity management: The 'essential' capability of successful Enterprise 2.0 efforts
It’s not a skill that’s been widely understood until quite recently, however community management has begun to move to the forefront of discussions about enterprise social computing as the use of social tools begins to climb the maturity curve. Now community management is increasingly proving not just useful but a critical component of Enterprise 2.0 efforts despite an often vague understanding of what it is and where it should be situated in the org chart.
HOW TO: Manage a Facebook Group
http://mashable.com/2009/10/07/facebook-groups/
"acebook Pages may be taking the social network by storm, but they can take time and technical skill to set up. When you need to promote something quickly, or are looking to foster a stronger sense of community, the more traditional Facebook Group is often the way to go. While not as fancy as Pages, Groups offer many of the same features, with a slightly more streamlined look. This makes it easy for virtually anyone to create a Group, for any number of purposes, and get them live quickly—an important benefit in the time-sensitive social media sphere. However, the ease and speed with which a Group can be set up has created a lot of spammy or messy Groups that are slapped together in minutes and abandoned soon after. In order to break through the clutter and gain members, you need to take the time to set up a Group correctly. Here are a few tips:

John Resig - Google Groups is Dead
http://ejohn.org/blog/google-groups-is-dead/
This post isn't so much about the usefulness of mailing lists as a discussion medium, it's the complete failure of Google Groups as an adequate purveyor of public discussion software. For the jQuery project we're already in the process of moving the full discussion area to a forum that we control. We should have it set up, and everything moved over, within the next month or two. There is one area in which Google Groups continues to shine: Private, or restricted, mailing list discussions. However any attempts at using it for a public discussion medium are completely futile. The primary problem with Google Groups boils down to a systemic failure to contain and manage spam. Only a bottom-up overhaul of the Google Groups system would be able to fix the problems that every Google Group faces.

10 WordPress Plugins to Help Build Community
http://mashable.com/2009/11/13/wordpress-community-plugins/
The expression of community has changed considerably since the emergence of social media technologies, but its basic foundation — the notion of individuals exchanging information, ideas, and opinions — remains firmly intact. Today, one of the most widely-used tools in developing these types of exchanges online is WordPress (WordPress), the popular blogging and publishing platform. Part of its appeal is the ease with which users can build advanced functionality into their sites with plugins. If you’re interested in building a community around your site, there are plenty of third-party add-ons that can help create one.

A Speculative Post on the Idea of Algorithmic Authority « Clay Shirky
http://www.shirky.com/weblog/2009/11/a-speculative-post-on-the-idea-of-algorithmic-authority/
one of the things up for grabs in the current news environment is the nature of authority. In particular, I noted that people trust new classes of aggregators and filters, whether Google or Twitter or Wikipedia (in its ‘breaking news’ mode.). Algorithmic authority is the decision to regard as authoritative an unmanaged process of extracting value from diverse, untrustworthy sources, without any human standing beside the result saying “Trust this because you trust me.”
Algorithmic authority is the decision to regard as authoritative an unmanaged process of extracting value from diverse, untrustworthy sources, without any human standing beside the result saying “Trust this because you trust me.” This model of authority differs from personal or institutional authority, and has, I think, three critical characteristics.
We were talking about authority and trust the other day in class after Angela's presentation on medical diagnoses - here's a new post from Clay Shirky on the topic - worth reading.

If you don’t know of him, I would start with Borges: Collected Fictions , which is certainly worthwhile..........To try and trick the self-consciousness away I framed this blog as “Notes and Advice to Someone Just Like Me.” I assumed that someone like me would be a more forgiving audience. 3) I was wrong. How the OAuth Security Battle Was Won, Open Web Style - ReadWriteWeb
http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/how_the_oauth_security_battle_was_won_open_web_sty.php
And that's how a decentralized community solved a security threat in an open identity spec, quickly. One company (Twitter) took a risk at implementing a new technology advocated by an employee of another company (Yahoo's Hammer-Lahav), then an engineer at yet another company found the beginning of the security hole, then news of the whole problem was sent out to contacts on a Wiki, an email list was formed, companies donated their employees' valuable time to aid in the effort, everyone more or less kept their mouths shut (including the unfairly criticized Twitter) and then everyone worked together to find a solution just in time. I think that's a pretty cool story.
RT @jayrosen_nyu: I understood about 40% of this, but wow, what a story. How OAuth Security Battle Was Won, Open Web Style http://tr.im/jICt [from http://twitter.com/CircleReader/statuses/1617435709]
At some point in conversation Hammer-Lahav realized that the problem went far beyond the Twitter implementation. The OAuth protocol had an inherent vulnerability; big companies like Google, Netflix and Yahoo had implemented OAuth and scores of tiny startups had too... OAuth has support, but it doesn't have a centralized authority ready to deal with problems like this. Over the next week a story unfolded as the community moved to deal with the security issue. It's a dramatic story.

Pirate Bay Witness’ Wife Overwhelmed With Flowers
When Professor and media researcher Roger Wallis left the stand yesterday, the court asked whether he wanted to be reimbursed for his appearance. “You are welcome to send some flowers to my wife,” he responded. In the hours that followed, many Pirate Bay supporters took this suggestion to hand.
Thus far, in an amazing show of generosity from a section of society labeled by the music industry as ‘thieves’, more than 4100 Euros worth of flowers, chocolate and gifts have been sent to the couple.

Life Inc: The Book
http://lifeincorporated.net/
got mugged on Christmas Eve. I was in front of my Brooklyn apartment house taking out the trash when a man pulled a gun and told me to empty my pockets. I gave him my money, wallet, and cell phone. But then—remembering something I’d seen in a movie about a hostage negotiator—I begged him to let me keep my medical- insurance card. If I could humanize myself in his perception, I figured, he’d be less likely to kill me. He accepted my argument about how hard it would be for me to get “care” without it, and handed me back the card. Now it was us two against the establishment, and we made something of a deal: in exchange for his mercy, I wasn’t to report him—even though I had plainly seen his face. I agreed, and he ran off down the street. I foolishly but steadfastly stood by my side of the bargain, however coerced it may have been, for a few hours. As if I could have actually entered into a binding contract at gunpoint.

Despite a worsening economy, some bootstrapped startups are witnessing tremendous growth, both in user participation and back-end development. Case in point, Tip'd, a four month old financial news site which has seen its monthly traffic double, submissions almost triple, and its user base increase by an average of 60 new members every day. But what is it about this niche vertical site that has in such a short period of time grown to become one of the leading financial news sites on the Web? According to Muhammad Saleem, Tip'd's community director, there is no secret ingredient to success. Instead, it's about maintaining focus on community and continuously delivering tools to help them sort through the noise that has become an unfortunate side effect of today's information age.

It's a finding that strikes at the foundation of many a social-media marketing philosophy: Tapping into peer-to-peer networks is a way for marketers to tell authentic, credible stories to consumers whose confidence in corporate CEOs, news outlets, government officials and industry analysts has taken a beating. BBC NEWS | Magazine | What's the ideal number of friends?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/7920434.stm
The average number is about 150, says leading anthropologist Robin Dunbar.
You can have friends because of what you do together or enjoy something together like football or shopping, but they're not as profound friends as those who you love for themselves because of something in their character.
Having more friends leads to earning more.
They usually consist of an inner circle of five "core" people and an additional layer of 10, he says. That makes 15 people - some will probably be family members - who are your central group and then outside that, there's another 35 in the next circle and another 100 on the outside. And that's one person's social world.
Attention Facebook users with 500+ friends: You are lying.

The Science of Building Trust With Social Media
http://mashable.com/2010/02/24/social-media-trust/
Como establecer la verdad cuando nuestra identidad online esta poco mas que un avatar y pocas lineas de texto?
Few, if any, educational institutes teach the art of proper digital communication. Most of us have simply made up an impromptu strategy and crossed our fingers in the hopes that disaster doesn’t strike. With a bit of help from our friends in the fields of psychology and information technology, we can apply the age-old intuitions of face-to-face conversation to whatever advances in technology come our way.
Alright, so we keep talking about how government agencies need to gain the trust of our communities so they'll follow our recommendations. In the same breath, we declare that social media will be that silver bullet that will make everyone believe what we say and will allow our response/outreach/efforts to succeed beyond our wildest dreams. Turns out there's some research into how that actually happens. Take note and maybe your next response will be met with open ears and not wary eyes.

The 11 Commandments of Corporate Tweeting | The Big Money

# We can articulate the company vision in 140 characters or less # We are willing to give credit to cool, innovative, or thought-provoking ideas # We are willing to challenge a potentially destructive position . # We are willing to listen to and engage with others # We will not get carried away # We will dedicate time each week to reading what others have to say and promise to retweet # We will never include in a press release, speech, or annual report # We actually have something meaningful to say. # If we don't have something to say, we'll find the person in the organization # If we cannot live up to these commandments we will reflect on whether corporate marketing is the right role for us. # We will use our Twitter channel not just to bump out cheery news, but to keep customers informed in the event of bad news.

Recasting the experience as a game means it can be simultaneously complex and easily learnable. I'm still convinced there is a way to have a civilized discussion online with complete strangers, but we haven't gotten there yet. The only really viable way I can see is heavy-handed moderation. When I say heavy-handed, I mean don't allow users to post "me too!" replies. Don't allow straying wildly off-topic. Don't post threads just to chat in specialized forums. Without critical mass, questions go unanswered and the site becomes a ghost town. I thought the combination of my audience and Jeff’s would bring enough great developers into the site to reach critical mass on day 1

I have been using this technology since 1995 and for the first time have really realized what it is that I have been working toward. I have always used a descriptive rubric to evaluate participation in the DF and that has helped somewhat in creating a learning community. But, now with Gallagher's "tools", the 5 Eyes, the legs, the social voice, I can really help students participate to regularly create the kind of community that has from time to time evolved serendipitously. For me, the social versus the solo voice has been the biggest challenge, but with the languaging Gallagher has shared, I am enthusiastic about my ability to raise the level of meaningful discourse a notch or two! I teach in a graduate program in Nursing, and one of the areas of my teaching is Nursing Education.
" The answers to question 13 on survey 1, for instance, revealed--quite frighteningly, actually--that these students saw themselves as passive, solitary, joyless toilers in a middle world devoid of intellectual community. "

Introducing the Collaboration Curve - The Big Shift - HarvardBusiness.org
http://blogs.harvardbusiness.org/bigshift/2009/04/introducing-the-collaboration.html
Business bloggers at Harvard Business Review discuss a variety of business topics including managing people, innovation, leadership, and more.
April 8, 2009.
Collaboration (conversation) as a mechanism for accelerating growth along the 'experience curve'
Network effects = the value of a node in a network rises exponentially as more nodes are added to it. These are called network effects
rapid leaps in performance improvement arise as participants get better faster by working with others. These leaps in performance describe the shape and power of the collaboration curve, a new force in our professional and personal lives that turns the experience curve on its side, and explains why the whole of us, working, playing, and, learning together, can often be greater than the sum of our parts.
Collaboration curves. And WoW.
Collaboration curves hold the potential to mobilize larger and more diverse groups of participants to innovate and create new value. In so doing they may also reverse the diminishing returns dynamics of the experience curve and deliver increasing returns to performance instead. The evidence for the collaboration curve is, as yet, mostly anecdotal.

Someone — be it an advertiser, an administrator, an investor or an entrepreneur — is footing the bill for every one and zero that’s electronically transmitted across this great Internet of ours. And at some point, most of those folks expect to see a return on their investment.

Trent Reznor is still cool even though he's not single man http://bit.ly/JuYKP [from http://twitter.com/DangerGranger/statuses/2185029292]
good comment below
Trent Reznor versus anonymous douchebags. "The reason no record label knows how to market anything to new media is they don't live there. They don't get it because they don't use it. What you've seen happen with the marketing and presentation of NIN over the last years is a direct result of living next to you, listening to you, consuming with you and interacting with you. Directly. There's no handlers or PR people here, it's me and my guys - that's it. There's no real plan, even - it's just trying to do the right thing that respects you the fan, the music, and me the artist. That's the goal - a mutual and shared respect. "
Trent Reznor talks about his recent social networks use, what he found difficult like trolls, ...
Faced with leaving the infrastructure of traditional record labels and figuring out what the right thing to do is in this new world - I found myself realizing that for me to have any concept of how to interact with the community and know what they might want / what they find appropriate, I need to immerse myself in that world and live it for a while.

Nine Inch Nail's Trent Reznor explains (in a bit of a rambling rant) why he's quitting Twitter and why 'idiots rule'. Interesting take on social networking from the perspective of a celebrity.
I will be tuning out of the social networking sites because at the end of the day it's now doing more harm than good in the bigger picture and the experiment seems to have yielded a result. Idiots rule. ... With all of that said, I have business in the real world to attend to including wrapping up the live version of NIN, DOING some cool new shit and spending as much time as possible with the most amazing woman in the world. Nine Inch NailsのTrent Reznorの「残念なUSのWeb」発言である。

You've got to know what you stand for to survive in journalism online
http://www.ojr.org/ojr/people/robert/200904/1688/
You don't have to believe in my values. But if you want to attract an audience in the competitive online information market, I think you need to choose some values to believe in, and to express them, defend them, and practice them before your audience. Readers, now that they have more choices, want to know whose side you are on.
Established journalists and newsrooms making the transition to online publishing should not do so with the assumption that editorial content provides their strength in a competitive online information market. Often, the editorial content established journalists provide is not what online readers want, or even what they need.
steven johnson, valores do jornalismo
Established journalists and newsrooms making the transition to online publishing should not do so with the assumption that editorial content provides their strength in a competitive online information market. Often, the editorial content established journalists provide is not what online readers want, or even what they need. That's a harsh realization for many journalists, who have worked intensely to cover their communities for years. But effort and will don't deliver readers. Information that engages and rewards them does. Journalists, and their managers, need to take a hard look at how they are producing information, so that they don't repeat the same editorial mistakes that have driven so many readers to online competition.
Good argument: with journalists as experts, why do we need editors?

Two open source hardware enthusiasts, Justin Huynh and Matt Stack, have started the Open Source Hardware Bank to fund hardware projects such as the microcontroller board pictured above.

Seth's Blog: The sad truth about marketing shortcuts
http://sethgodin.typepad.com/seths_blog/2008/10/the-sad-truth-a.html
«This is why I don't have a podcast, a video channel, any activity to speak of on Facebook. It's why I don't use Twitter or travel the country visiting bookstores. There are many places to be, and it's tempting to act like those non-profits and race after the next one. But it doesn't work.»
Critical mass is what happens when you have enough and do enough that you connect to a tribe, one that matters. Critical mass is the pay off from focused, consistent effort. Critical mass is what you don't get if you are constantly working the angles and looking for a shortcut.
Why rushing from one quick win to another won't get you anywhere in social media.

Godin's concept of tribes is similar to Gadwell's talk about the 150 rule in the Tipping point

Directions for about 25 well-proven games for groups are succinctly supplied by this free PDF book, aimed at community building.
Kevin Kelly: "Directions for about 25 well-proven games for groups are succinctly supplied by this free PDF book. These games originated in church youth groups, but I've seen them used at camps, large family gatherings, company retreats, and even a few tech meetings. They are aimed at building community, and are primarily ones that can be run indoors. I've played a number of these games as an adult over the years and they really are deep fun. It is amazing how fast you can unleash your inner kindergartner. Some of this group fun, like Silent Football, have been around since ancient youth camp times. I wish more folks would enliven their stuffy meetings and offsites with a few of these games."

Few industries are experiencing greater upheaval at the hands of technological progress than the news media. New ideas are popping up every day, so we’ve collected five of the most interesting ones for your consideration. The previous generation of sites that redefined the news birthed several household names — Twitter (Twitter), YouTube (YouTube) and Digg (Digg), to name a few. It’s no secret that newspapers have struggled as blogs and social networking sites have grown in prominence, but in the rapidly changing worlds of mobile and web technology, the distribution methods for news information are once again shifting. It’s difficult to predict whether or not these newly noticed innovators will become as popular as their predecessors, but they are introducing new approaches to the consumption of information that few have tried or thought of before.

"I vowed I would never become a Twit. Now I have Tweeted nearly 10,000 Tweets. I said Twitter represented the end of civilization. It now represents a part of the civilization I live in. I said it was impossible to think of great writing in terms of 140 characters. I have been humbled by a mother of three in New Delhi. I said I feared I would become addicted. I was correct." Facebook's Culture Problem May Be Fatal - The Conversation - Harvard Business Review
http://blogs.hbr.org/cs/2010/05/facebooks_culture_problem_may.html
"They just assumed Facebook would evolve as their lives shifted from adolescent to adult and their needs changed. Facebook's failure to recognize this culture change deeply threatens its future profits."
"Facebook's imbroglio over privacy reveals what may be a fatal business model..."
Privacy. Seemingly altruistic companies screwing over their users for monetization and business models
What lessons can we draw from the Facebook flameup? Lifecycle changes can trump generational change and cultural values perceived as crucial at the age of 13 can be very different at 20. A business founded on the values of a generation, such as Facebook, has to keep up with, and respect, evolving lives and needs.

danah boyd | apophenia » “for the lolz”: 4chan is hacking the attention economy
http://www.zephoria.org/thoughts/archives/2010/06/12/for-the-lolz-4chan-is-hacking-the-attention-economy.html
They are showing that Top 100 lists can be gamed and that entertaining content can reach mass popularity without having any commercial intentions (regardless of whether or not someone decided to commercialize it on the other side). Their antics force people to think about status and power and they encourage folks to laugh at anything that takes itself too seriously. The mindset is deeply familiar to me and it doesn’t surprise me when I learn that old hacker types get a warm fuzzy feeling thinking about 4chan even if trolls and griefers annoy the hell out of them. In a mediated environment where marketers are taking over, there’s something subversively entertaining about betting on the anarchist subculture. Cuz, really, at the end of the day, many old skool hackers weren’t entirely thrilled to realize that mainstreamification of net culture meant that mainstream culture would dominate net culture.

How to Get the Social-Media Generation Behind Your Cause - Advertising Age - Digital
http://adage.com/digital/article?article_id=144686
"Once social activism meant protest marches, civil obedience and sit-ins. But for today's 20-somethings ... supporting or denouncing a cause is as simple as hitting the "like" button on Facebook or posting a hashtag to Twitter. And that's often where it ends.... But that can also be where it begins...."

Adults born between 1982 and 1992 came of age during a decade that promised an "embarrassment of riches," said Eliza Esquivel, TBWA's planning director and author of the study. "They were told that the future was theirs to win, and they've been very empowered, very educated, and as a result this is a very optimistic group." At the same time, they are a group that witnessed spectacular failures of institutions and corporations, having witnessed the scandal at Enron and now being bombarded with news of misdoings by Goldman Sachs and BP. Thus along with their optimism, this is a group equally prone to cynicism about corporate efforts.

Citizen journalism: can small be bountiful? | Media | The Guardian
http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2010/jun/14/citizen-journalism-hyperlocal-news
Hyperlocal news projects that start tiny have a greater chance of success – but many find themselves with more kudos than cash
Jemima Kiss and Heather Christie/The Guardian, June 14, 2010.
"Would you trust a citizen brain surgeon?" This was a common refrain in 2005, as the news industry grappled with citizen journalism and the implications of a new technologically empowered public. But many of the most promising and worthy projects have vapourised. While the concept seems admirable, and experimentation valuable, it is invariably the finances that just don't work. So is there any viable commercial future? The "citizen journalism" label has been largely unhelpful. The most exciting developments now might be news, but the content is often closer to community activism. Many are finally beginning to tap into the growing resources of community tech tools, from FixMyStreet.com to a wave of civic-minded apps, such as those developed by Social Innovation Camp.
