Facebook Opens Status API, Say Goodbye to Twitter
http://www.allfacebook.com/2009/02/facebook-opens-status-api-say-goodbye-to-twitter/
Tonight Facebook has made a number of updates to the Facebook platform one of which is the opening of status updates. In order to get Facebook statuses, you no longer need to use a session ID to access statuses. This is a huge update and one that I think is going to take Facebook to the next level. There are additional updates listed in the Facebook blog post:

I focus on the Documents List API for most of the samples, but the same concepts can be applied to any of the Data APIs.
Create a REST API with PHP « Gen X Design | Ian Selby
http://www.gen-x-design.com/archives/create-a-rest-api-with-php/
One of the latest (sort of) crazes sweeping the net is APIs, more specifically those that leverage REST. It’s really no surprise either, as consuming REST APIs is so incredibly easy… in any language. It’s also incredibly easy to create them as you essentially use nothing more than an HTTP spec that has existed for ages. One of the few things that I give Rails credit for is its well thought-out REST support, both for providing and consuming these APIs (as its been explained by all the Rails fanboys I work with).

The “blind astrometry server” is a program which monitors the Astrometry group on Flickr, looking for new photos of the night sky. It then analyzes each photo, and from the unique star positions shown it figures out what part of the sky was photographed and what interesting planets, galaxies or nebulae are contained within. Not only does the photographer get a high-quality description of what’s in their photo, but the main Astrometry.net project gets a new image to add to its storehouse of knowledge.

Ajaxian » Designing a JavaScript client for a REST API
http://ajaxian.com/archives/designing-a-javascript-client-for-a-rest-api
So you want to write a script that sites all over the web can use to access your REST API, eh? Well, that would be pretty straightforward if it weren’t for two things: 1. browser same-origin restrictions on XMLHttpRequests (XHRs) and inter-window/frame access 2. the lack of wide browser support for HTML 5-style message passing between windows. The Same-Origin Policy and its minor browser-specific variations are detailed elsewhere, so I’ll just summarize it with a few key points. I use the term window to mean window object, which can be a top-level page or reside inside a frame or iframe.
So you want to write a script that sites all over the web can use to access your REST API, eh? Well, that would be pretty straightforward...
A comprehensive article outlining an approach on how to create a RESTful JavaScript client. The article explains not only how to create a client for your own RESTful services, but also interacting with cross-domain ones. There is also code posted on Google Code which implements the concepts presented in the article.

Social Web Q&A with Google’s Kevin Marks
http://www.techcrunchit.com/2009/02/23/social-web-qa-with-googles-kevin-marks/
I call this the “social cloud,” meaning that “social” will be integrated with the web so that you don’t think about it anymore. Charlene Li calls this same idea “social networks become like air.” The web itself is like this — following links seems like second nature to us because we know a URL can take us anywhere. -- (on OpenSocial and other things)
In this Q&A-style post, Kevin delves into the standards that make up the emerging open social stack (OpenID, OAuth, Portable Contacts, and OpenSocial), looking at the infrastructure problems they address, and exploring some of the live implementations, including Plaxo and Google Friend Connect.

Facebook in 2010: no longer a walled garden - O'Reilly Radar
http://radar.oreilly.com/2009/03/facebook-in-2010-no-longer-a-walled-garden.html
A lot of what I've been working on the past two years has been built on the assumption that the model that social networks use today will fundamentally change. Social networks have largely been built on the premise of being walled gardens in such a way that users can't communicate or share content or friends across networks; put simply this is what keeps a Facebook user from being able to send a message to a MySpace user.

jespern / django-piston / wiki / Home — bitbucket.org
A tool for creating RESTful APIs in Django.
Get the latest version (0.1) here. A mini-framework for Django for creating RESTful APIs. Piston is a relatively small Django application that lets you create application programming interfaces (API) for your sites. It has several unique features: * Ties into Django's internal mechanisms. * Supports OAuth out of the box (as well as Basic/Digest or custom auth.) * Doesn't require tying to models, allowing arbitrary resources. * Speaks JSON, YAML, Python Pickle & XML (and HATEOAS.) * Ships with a convenient reusable library in Python * Respects and encourages proper use of HTTP (status codes, ...) * Has built in (optional) form validation (via Django), throttling, etc. * Stays out of your way. Piston logo NB: OAuth ships with piston for now, but you are not required to use it. It simply provides some boilerplate in case you want to use it later (consumer/token models, urls, etc.) Documentation o Piston Documentation + Gett

If you poke around you’ll find a couple-three different stabs at writing a generic REST API module for Django. So, with no further ado, some REST “worst practices:” Conflating models and resources In the REST world, the resource is key, and it’s really tempting to simply look at a Django model and make a direct link between resources and models — one model, one resource. This fails, though, as soon as you need to provide any sort of aggregated resource, and it really fails with highly denormalized models. Think about a Superhero model: a single GET /heros/superman/ ought to return all his vital stats along with a list of related Power objects, a list of his related Friend objects, etc. So the dat

Today we are excited to announce an important step toward greater openness through Facebook Platform. For the first time, we're opening the core Facebook product experience -- the stream -- with the new Facebook Open Stream API. The home page design centralizes the stream of information that tells you what's going on right now in the world around you. With the Facebook Open Stream API users will be able to use applications to read and interact with their stream, anywhere. As a Facebook developer you'll also be able to access the stories you've published into the stream and display them in your application, whether it's on a mobile device, Web site or desktop, for users however you choose. To enable developers to access the stream, we've built the Facebook Open Stream API in part using the emerging Activity Streams standard. Best Practices for building JSON REST Web Services « Building Feedly
http://blog.feedly.com/2009/05/06/best-practices-for-building-json-rest-web-services/
A few of our friends have been asking us what are some of the best practices we learnt over the last two years designing and implementing RESTful Web Services as the back-end of the feedly service. Here is a quick/high level brain dump: Phase 1 – Defining a simple resource/service | Take a sample resource such as Customer Information, model it as JSON. Build a simple servlet where PUT creates a new customer, GET returns the customer information based on the customer key, DELETE deletes the customer and POST updates the customer information. Make sure that PUT returns the right information regarding the URL of the newly created resource. In our case, we have a framework which maps JSON to our Java Model and use hibernate to persist that model in a MySQL database. The important things for this phase are to the JSON representation right and the base url formatting simple and clean. Phase 2 – Implementing a client | Learn how to build a simple Javascript client which interacts with the s

Whither Sockets? - ACM Queue
http://queue.acm.org/detail.cfm?id=1538949
The Internet and the networking world in general have changed in very significant ways since the sockets API was first developed, but in many ways the API has had the effect of narrowing the way in which developers think about and write networked applications. This article begins by briefly examining some of the conditions present when the sockets API was developed and considers how those conditions shaped the way in which networking code was written. The remainder of the article looks at ways in which developers have tried to get around some of the inherent limitations in the API and talks about the future of sockets in a changing networked world.

Get Your API Right « Trek
http://wonderfullyflawed.com/2009/07/02/get-your-api-right/
If you’re not allowing clients to create new data, or update/delete existing data on your system then you do not have an API. You have a feed. There’s nothing wrong providing read-only access to your data (it’s laudable, in fact), but I’m often disappointed to hear “Yeah! We have an API” only to find the person really meant they offered a number of customizable data feeds as XML.

After finding out about GitHub pages, I decided to put mine to good use by building a mashup for my online content. Since we don’t have any control on the server side, we’re going to use only javascript to make it dynamic. This tutorial will show you how to use jQuery and JSONP to pull data from Twitter, GitHub, and an RSS Feed (without any server side magic). The techniques here can easily be used to interact with any other API.

Develop Twitter API application in django and deploy on Google App Engine — The Uswaretech Blog - Django Web Development
http://uswaretech.com/blog/2009/04/develop-twitter-api-application-in-django-and-deploy-on-google-app-engine/
Useful, quick and easy walkthrough of writing a Python/Django app which interfaces with Twitter, and deploying it to Google AppEngine.
Twitter’s robust REST API enables building of good applications that leverage its increasingly large and real-time data. Google’s cloud system App Engine not only provides a scalable platform for deploying applications, but also proves to be economically viable because of its pay per resource usage model and a large free quota. Little wonder then, there are increasingly large number of twitter apps being deployed on App Engine. In this post, I am going to examine how to create a simple application based on twitter’s REST API and deploy it on Google App Engine. A deployed version can be found on Twitter-Follow. The specification is simple. It finds if a twitter user is following another twitter user, given their user names. The application is developed using django and deployed on Appengine using the app engine patch project. The code is open sourced with GPL v3 and can be checked out from Google Code. Lets get started building this application.

Twitter Blog: Location, Location, Location
http://blog.twitter.com/2009/08/location-location-location.html
From the Twitter Blog: > We're gearing up to launch a new feature which makes Twitter truly location-aware. A new API will allow developers to add latitude and longitude to any tweet. Folks will need to activate this new feature by choice because it will be off by default and the exact location data won't be stored for an extended period of time. However, if people do opt-in to sharing location on a tweet-by-tweet basis, compelling context will be added to each burst of information. This, along with their mention of the ability to pull messages based on geographic scope, will open up a lot of possibilities. News reporting is one of the biggest ones, but events and even finding people in your neighborhood are obvious extensions.

RSSCloud Vs. PubSubHubbub: Why The Fat Pings Win
http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/09/09/rsscloud-vs-pubsubhubbub-why-the-fat-pings-win/
Both PuSH and rssCloud address a fundamental flaw in the way web applications work today. Currently, getting updates on the web requires constant polling. Subscribers are forced to act like nagging children asking, “Are we there yet?” Subscribers must constantly ping the publisher to ask if there are new updates even if the answer is “no” 99% of the time. This is terribly inefficient, wastes resources, and makes it incredibly hard to find new content in as soon as it appears. Both protocols flip the current model on its head so that updates are event driven rather than request driven. By that I mean that both protocols eliminate the need for polling by essentially telling subscribers, “Don’t ask us if there’s anything new. We’ll tell you.”

It returns the translated text as a Unicode string. Don’t forget to encode it to the right encoding before outputting, otherwise you’ll get errors such as “UnicodeEncodeError: ‘latin-1′ codec can’t encode characters in position 0-3: ordinal not in range(256)”

PJF's Pages - Journal - Dark Stalking on Facebook
http://pjf.id.au/blog/?position=590
What makes this all rather chilling is that I'm doing all of this via the application API. If your friend has installed an application, then it can access quite a lot of information about you, unless you turn it off. If your friend has granted the application the read_stream privilege, then it can read your status stream. Even if a friend of a friend has done this, and you comment on your friend's status entries, it's possible to infer your existence and retrieve those discussions through dark stalking.
Most recently, I've been able to obtain status feeds, even for users who have very tight privacy settings, although I had to tweak my own application's privileges to do so. I don't know how far into the past these go, but they also come with likes information, and comments. This gives me a wealth of information on the strength and types of relationships people have. A person who comments a lot on another user's posts probably finds that user interesting. If I descended into keyword and text analysis, I may even be able to determine how they find that user interesting.

2-D maps are great, but sometimes it's cool to gaze into the distance. Today we're happy to announce support for perspective in the Maps API for Flash. We've taken the regular API, added pitch and yaw, borrowed the look-around control from Google Earth, and thrown in some nifty camera trajectory support. The opportunity to see the world from a chosen point of view is now in the hands of a user! Here's a perspective map in action. Sit back and watch or dive in and drag the view. Microsoft Toolkit to enable .NET developers to quickly and easily leverage the various features of the Facebook Platform.
This toolkit is provided as a Facebook Client Library similar to Facebook's PHP Client Library or Facebook's JavaScript library. The goal is to enable .NET developers to quickly and easily leverage the various features of the Facebook Platform. This toolkit has evolved over time with input from the community and from Microsoft. The latest release (v3.0) includes new architectural improvements and provides an asynchronous interface for using the toolkit from Silverlight and from WPF. The main entry point is the API (Facebook.Rest.Api) class in the Facebook.dll assembly. This class wraps the Facebook REST API and provides an easy to use interface for calling the different methods currently available in the Facebook API. We've also provided samples and tools for helping develop Facebook applications in the various .NET platforms including: ASP.NET, Silverlight, WPF and WinForms. Additionally, we've provided all the source code for the API, components, controls, and samples for you to exp

Here is a quick hack that I wrote. It’s a Python library to search Google without using their API. It’s quick and dirty, just the way I love it. Why didn’t I use Google’s provided REST API? Because it says “you can only get up to 8 results in a single call and you can’t go beyond the first 32 results”. Seriously, what am I gonna do with just 32 results?

BERT and BERT-RPC 1.0 Specification
http://bert-rpc.org/
BERT and BERT-RPC are an attempt to specify a flexible binary serialization and RPC protocol that are compatible with the philosophies of dynamic languages such as Ruby, Python, PERL, JavaScript, Erlang, Lua, etc. BERT aims to be as simple as possible while maintaining support for the advanced data types we have come to know and love. BERT-RPC is designed to work seamlessly within a dynamic/agile development workflow. The BERT-RPC philosophy is to eliminate extraneous type checking, IDL specification, and code generation. This frees the developer to actually get things done.

How the OAuth Security Battle Was Won, Open Web Style - ReadWriteWeb
http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/how_the_oauth_security_battle_was_won_open_web_sty.php
And that's how a decentralized community solved a security threat in an open identity spec, quickly. One company (Twitter) took a risk at implementing a new technology advocated by an employee of another company (Yahoo's Hammer-Lahav), then an engineer at yet another company found the beginning of the security hole, then news of the whole problem was sent out to contacts on a Wiki, an email list was formed, companies donated their employees' valuable time to aid in the effort, everyone more or less kept their mouths shut (including the unfairly criticized Twitter) and then everyone worked together to find a solution just in time. I think that's a pretty cool story.
RT @jayrosen_nyu: I understood about 40% of this, but wow, what a story. How OAuth Security Battle Was Won, Open Web Style http://tr.im/jICt [from http://twitter.com/CircleReader/statuses/1617435709]
At some point in conversation Hammer-Lahav realized that the problem went far beyond the Twitter implementation. The OAuth protocol had an inherent vulnerability; big companies like Google, Netflix and Yahoo had implemented OAuth and scores of tiny startups had too... OAuth has support, but it doesn't have a centralized authority ready to deal with problems like this. Over the next week a story unfolded as the community moved to deal with the security issue. It's a dramatic story.

Dare Obasanjo aka Carnage4Life - REST API Design: Invent Media Types, Not Protocols and Understand the Importance of Hyperlinks
http://www.25hoursaday.com/weblog/2008/10/24/RESTAPIDesignInventMediaTypesNotProtocolsAndUnderstandTheImportanceOfHyperlinks.aspx
The key thing to remember is that REST is about building software that scales to usage on the World Wide Web by being a good participant of the Web ecosystem. Ideally a RESTful API should be designed to be implementable by thousands of websites and consumed by hundreds of applications running on dozens of platforms with zero coupling between the client applications and the Web services. A great example of this is RSS/Atom feeds which happen to be one of the world's most successful RESTful API stories.

Think a tweet is just 140 characters of text? Think again. To developers building tools on top of the Twitter platform, they know tweets contain far more information than just whatever brief, passing thought you felt the urge to share with your friends via the microblogging network. A tweet is filled with metadata - information about when it was sent, by who, using what Twitter application and so on. Now, thanks to Raffi Krikorian, a developer on Twitter's API/Platform team, you can see what a tweet looks like, in all its data-rich detail.
Like Button - Facebook Developers

The Like button enables users to make connections to your pages and share content back to their friends on Facebook with one click. Since the content is hosted by Facebook, the button can display personalized content whether or not the user has logged into your site. For logged-in Facebook users, the button is personalized to highlight friends who have also liked the page. The basic Like button is available via a simple iframe you can drop into your page easily. A fuller-featured Like button is available via the <fb:like> XFBML tag and requires you use the JavaScript SDK. The XFBML version allows users to add a comment to their like as it is posted back to Facebook.

The Open Graph Protocol
http://opengraphprotocol.org/
The Open Graph protocol enables any web page to become a rich object in a social graph. For instance, this is used on Facebook to enable any web page to have the same functionality as a Facebook Page. While many different technologies and schemas exist and could be combined together, there isn't a single technology which provides enough information to richly represent any web page within the social graph. The Open Graph protocol builds on these existing technologies and gives developers one thing to implement. Developer simplicity is a key goal of the Open Graph protocol which has informed many of the technical design decisions.
Open Graph protocol - Facebook Developers
http://developers.facebook.com/docs/opengraph
The Open Graph protocol enables you to integrate your web pages into the social graph. It is currently designed for web pages representing profiles of real-world things — things like movies, sports teams, celebrities, and restaurants. Once your pages become objects in the graph, users can establish connections to your pages as they do with Facebook Pages. Based on the structured data you provide via the Open Graph protocol, your pages show up richly across Facebook: in user profiles, within search results and in News Feed.

Convert HTML to PDF | Online HTML to PDF API
http://pdfcrowd.com/
Online service Pdfcrowd turns any web site into PDF format easily with a variety of options, including the ability to set margins, encrypt files, or disable copying and printing. We've covered services and browser extensions like this site before, but Pdfcrowd's got a lot more options that set it apart. The service is relatively straightforward. You've got a variety of ways to input your source: you can enter a URL, upload a HTML or TXT file (TXT is not officially supported, but it works), or enter HTML code directly. If you choose to enter HTML code, Pdfcrowd translates the code into PDF for you, and there's a WSISWYG editor available for making tweaks. After you set your options, hit the button to convert your file. Pdfcrowd does the job, but it does append "pdfcrowd.com" to your PDF in the the bottom right-hand corner. If that doesn't bother you, you might want to check out the webapp.

Making a Donation Center With PHP, MySQL and PayPal’s APIs – Tutorialzine

PayPal provides numerous APIs and integration options for third-party developers. One of these is the Donation button, which you can generate straight from PayPal’s site and include directly into your pages. Conversion rate for these buttons is typically minimal, but the right incentive can make a big difference. The idea is to have a dedicated Donation Center. This is a place, where you get to see what a difference your donation would make, and a list of people who have already donated. After choosing the amount you wish to donate and clicking the button, you are redirected to paypal.com to complete the transaction. After this is done, you are redirected back to the donation center where you can fill a form and get included in the official Donor List.

Quick Tip: Google Fonts API: You’re Going to Love This
Use Google Fonts Api to change the font simply
Google have made two huge announcements today. One of these concerns the Google Fonts API. Simply by linking to a particular font, stored on Google’s servers (save on bandwidth + caching benefits), we now have access to a wide array of custom fonts. Quite literally, you can integrate these fonts into your project in about 20 seconds. It’s as simple as that. Further, due to the operations being performed behind the scenes, these custom fonts will even be recognized back to Internet Explorer 6. I, for one, and am extremely excited about the possibilities, and the font catalog is surely to continue expanding over the coming years.

This guide explains how to use the Google Font API to add web fonts to your pages. You don't need to do any programming; all you have to do is add a special stylesheet link to your HTML document, then refer to the font in a CSS style.
String | Create a multi-language website or app | myGengo
http://mygengo.com/string/about
If you’re building a multi-language website or app, you probably use language files. When you change content in one language file, you need to remember to update the other language files. Even with source control, this can get messy pretty quickly if you have many languages, many translators or a large site. We encountered these problems ourselves and needed a tool to keep things organized - so we built String.
String manages your language files - from PHP to PO to Rails to iPhone apps. Import and export easily.

Twitter launches location - allows you to 'tag' tweets with locations, and it ties in with Foursquare/Gowalla. Big news in terms of easing integration and the fact that location is important, regardless of privacy issues. There will be a tech briefing available.
Twitter Blog: Twitter Places: More Context For Your Tweets http://orz.se/C3N
Starting today, you can tag Tweets with specific places, including all World Cup stadiums in South Africa, and create new Twitter Places. You can also click a Twitter Place within a Tweet to see recent Tweets from a particular location. Try it out during the next match—you will be able to see Tweets coming from the stadium.

Today's Guardian (Phil Gyford’s website)
http://www.gyford.com/phil/writing/2010/06/09/todays-guardian.php
I’ve blogged before about my dissatisfaction with news sources (eg, 1, 2), and earlier in the year I realised that one of the major problems online was delivery of text-based news. There was no online news source that I could browse and read as easily as I could a print newspaper. I identified three main issues that a better online news-reading solution should address: Friction Readability Finishability
Interesting article on the design of a modern day web newspaper.
This meant, for me, ditching any kind of conventional news website front page, or contents page. No lists of headlines, no decisions about which article to visit. Unusually, perhaps uniquely, for a news website the front page is a single story. Ideally this is the most important news of the day, although sometimes it’s the newspaper’s “other” front page item — it’s based on the order of articles here. Having a single story on the front page is terrible if a site wants to maximise page views and advertising etc. You might see that one article, think it’s boring, and go elsewhere. But that’s not my concern. I’m trying to make a site that makes it easy to read a newspaper, not support an entire company.
I’ve made a new thing, Today’s Guardian, a website that features today’s edition of the Guardian (or the Observer on Sundays). Hopefully it’s as easy to browse through today’s newspaper as it would be with the print edition. It’s made using the Guardian’s Content API. Read on for the thoughts behind it…

Introducing the Google Command Line Tool - Google Open Source Blog
Ever wanted to upload a folder full of photos to Picasa from a command prompt? We did, a lot, last summer. It made us want to say: $ google picasa create --title "My album" ~/Photos/vacation/*.jpg So we wrote a program to do that, and a whole lot more. GoogleCL is a command-line utility that provides access to various Google services. It streamlines tasks such as posting to a Blogger blog, adding events to Calendar, or editing documents on Google Docs.

Medición de rendimiento de sitios web
A tool that helps determine not just response and performance, but helps with client side "perceived" performance. Which can be two different cases.
boomerang is a piece of javascript that you add to your web pages, where it measures the performance of your website from your end user's point of view. It has the ability to send this data back to your server for further analysis. With boomerang, you find out exactly how fast your users think your site is.
Interesting tool allowing measurement of perceived speed of a web site on the client side.
