The Economy According To Mint
http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/01/30/the-economy-according-to-mint/
Recession spending by sector (US)
The spending data is cool, but it's largely meaningless to use for any decision-making about the state of the economy.
"Mint.com is in a unique position to answer this question – quantitatively. Since the crisis first hit in September, our user registration rate has more than quadrupled, giving us 900,000 sample points on the economy. That’s close to 1% of US households."
The average customer: "are spending $400 less each month than they were a year ago, have burned through half of their savings, and on average have taken on an additional $5k in debt."

Many of the more transformational aspects of the 2.0 era now have extensive groundwork laid for them, are available in genuinely enterprise-ready solutions/pilots, and many have just been waiting for the right situation; the driving need for businesses to change and transform in the face of radically different business conditions.
Google's First Real Threat? Twitter. - beyond 140 for @lewmoorman
http://lewmoorman.com/googles-first-real-threat-twit
Google used to get 100% of my queries. Today, I bet Twitter is getting at least 10% of them. There are some things Twitter is just flat out better at for getting information than Google.

Author noted he does almost all searching in firefox search bar. Recently noticed that am changing the settings there frequently. Google used to get 100% of my queries. Today, bet Twitter is getting at least 10% of them.
Clever. "Twitter is building a human powered search indexing engine. It is an engine that will build better results than any rules based index and has gotten millions of people super motivated to contribute for free every day (even though they don’t know it)."
The article's overall argument is a huge exaggeration, but the notion that searching across Twitter is better than searching across the entire Web for certain types of information has some truth to it. Especially for product reviews, the search space on Twitter is much less clogged with manufacturers and third-party distributors trying to sell shit -- basically, because of the social culture of Twitter, mentions of any product you might search for will be described and discussed from a personal and social point of view. However, this only works insofar as people treat Twitter as a personal messaging and status update service. I'm sure the Internet was great for product reviews too before companies started making their own websites. So if Twitter monetizes by building platforms for corporations, then it will become far less useful for product information. I don't buy the other advantage (evaluating readership through links) at all, because Google does the same thing with PageRank.

A popular Website, phpbb.com, was recently hacked. The hacker published approximately 20,000 user passwords from the site. This is like candy to us security professionals because it's hard data we can use to figure out how users choose passwords. I wrote a program to analyze these passwords looking for patterns, and came up with some interesting results.

http://musicmachinery.com/2009/03/02/in-search-of-the-click-track/
Can Rhythmic Analysis Demonstrate the Use of Robotic Beats?
I’ve always been curious about which drummers use a click track and which don’t, so I thought it might be fun to try to build a click track detector using the Echo Nest remix SDK ( remix is a Python library that allows you to analyze and manipulate music). In my first attempt, I used remix to analyze a track and then I just printed out the duration of each beat in a song and used gnuplot to plot the data. The results weren’t so good - the plot was rather noisy. It turns out there’s quite a bit of variation from beat to beat. In my second attempt I averaged the beat durations over a short window, and the resulting plot was quite good.

Despite all the activity, I haven’t yet seen a solution that offers the kind of valuable analytics that a company could use to understand the Twitter conversation relevant to their business. The applications above are either focused on the measurement of individual Twitter users or offer a high-level tracking of words and phases in the general conversation. They treat tweets as transactions — How many? How valuable? Who’s listening? Who’s responding?

http://johnnyholland.org/magazine/2009/02/deconstructing-analysis-techniques/
Analysis is that oft-glossed over, but extremely important step in the research process that sits between observation (data gathering) and our design insights or recommendations. In many respects, analysis is crucial to realizing the value of our research since good analysis can salvage something from bad research, but the converse is not so true. This is where the literature tends to fall a little silent, jumping over the analysis techniques straight to a discussion of how best to document and communicate the findings from analysis. This article seeks to begin to redress that imbalance by breaking down the analysis black box into its major sub-techniques.
Great overview of analysis techniques for any type of data

Twitter Marketing: Why You Don't Need to Mass Follow Twitter Users

Everyday great ideas come along and this is one of them
windows
Many people think that to achieve all of the above, they need to build a large list of Twitter followers and broadcast links to get free traffic. It’s a simple strategy. The more followers you have, the more people listen to you, and the easier it is to spread your messages. But do you really need a large number of followers to promote yourself successfully on Twitter? The answer is no. Not at all. But many people still persist in mass following users. Let’s look at some of the reasons why you don’t need to use this marketing tactic.

"Micro-blogging service Twitter remains the preserve of a few, despite the hype surrounding it."
"Twitter is a broadcast medium rather than an intimate conversation with friends." - Bill Heil Just 10% of Twitter users generate more than 90% of the content, a Harvard study of 300,000 users found. "This implies that Twitter's resembles more of a one-way, one-to-many publishing service more than a two-way, peer-to-peer communication network..." Nielsen Online figures show that visitors to the site increased by 1,382%, from 475,000 to seven million, between February 2008 and February 2009. It is thought to have grown beyond 10 million in the past 4 months. By comparison, Facebook - one of the most popular social networking sites by number of visitors - has 200 million active users and grew by 228% during the same period. Nielsen firm found that more than 60% of US Twitter users failed to return the following month. Conclusions: - Twitter is an open micro-blogging platform - It's growing fast but not sticky - RTS does not revolve around Twitter
study claims twitter is really more of a broadcast medium
stats from the nielsen og harvard studies show median post per person 1 and less than 10% active users...
On a typical online social network, he said, the top 10% of users accounted for 30% of all production.

A seriously good article on whether you can copyright tweets. Short answer: no.
Short answer: no, with a but; long answer: yes, with a maybe.
'Many people believe they own everything they post online, be it Tweets, Facebook status, or whatever. The truth is that most people are most likely incorrect in their assumption.'

"The express lane isn't faster. The manager backed me up on this one. You attract more people holding fewer total items, but as the data shows above, when you add one person to the line, you're adding 48 extra seconds to the line length (that's "tender time" added to "other time") without even considering the items in her cart. Meanwhile, an extra item only costs you an extra 2.8 seconds. Therefore, you'd rather add 17 more items to the line than one extra person! I can't believe I'm dropping exclamation points in an essay on grocery shopping but that's how this stuff makes me feel."

IBM Study: The end of advertising as we know it

its past. The push for control of attention, creativity, measurements and inventory will reshape the advertising value chain and shift the balance of power.
Research report w/ PDF download by IBM Research on the future of ad models
Based on IBM global surveys there are four change drivers shifting control within the ad industry: 1. Attention – Consumers are increasingly in control of how they view, interact with and filter advertising in a multichannel world. 2. Creativity – Thanks to technology, the rising popularity of user-generated and peer-delivered content, and new ad revenue-sharing models (e.g., YouTube, Crackle, Current TV), amateurs and semi- professionals are now creating lower-cost advertising content. 3. Measurement – Advertisers are demanding more individual-specific and involvement- based measurements, putting pressure on the traditional mass-market model. 4. Advertising inventories – Will be bought and sold through efficient exchanges, bypassing traditional intermediaries.

and a significant share of ad space is sold through auctions and exchanges. Advertisers know who viewed and acted on an ad, and pay based on real impact rather than estimated “impressions.” Consumers self-select which ads they watch and share preferred ads with peers. User-generated advertising is as prevalent (and appealing) as agency-created spots.

Some readers have asked me to put all the various odd lies of Sarah Palin that the Dish has compiled in one helpful place. So that's what we've done. A couple of months ago, I asked an intern to re-fact-check all of them to make sure new details hadn't emerged that might debunk some. And I also asked to get any subsequent statements by Palin that acknowledged that she had erred in any of these statements that are easily rebuttable by facts in the public record and apologized and corrected. She has not. Since this was a vast project over the last ten months, it's possible there are some nuances or errors that need fixing. Please tell us if you find one and we'll acknowledge and fix. But it has been put through the ringer a few times. After you have read these, ask yourself: what wouldn't Sarah Palin lie about if she felt she had to?

What I’ve Earned (And Learned) From Writing “Beginning Ruby”
http://beginningruby.org/what-ive-earned-and-learned/
As the author of Beginning Ruby, I make money for every copy sold in print and electronic formats (as well as some miscellaneous income I’ll cover later). It’s not much money – but that wasn’t the motivation for writing the book. In this post I’m going to show you how it all works from my point of view including sales figures, pictures of my royalty statements, information about my advance, and similar gruesome stuff. There’s even a section at the end about how Apress pissed me off a bit (though I don’t regret the experience with them) and why I’m happy with you pirating my book if you so choose.
Nice summary of why you shouldn't give up your day job to write a technical book. The guy is wrong however in thinking he would make more money in giving the ebook away for free. It would be better to give a chapter away for free.

Green Dam
We examined the Green Dam software and found that it contains serious security vulnerabilities due to programming errors. Once Green Dam is installed, any web site the user visits can exploit these problems to take control of the computer. This could allow malicious sites to steal private data, send spam, or enlist the computer in a botnet. In addition, we found vulnerabilities in the way Green Dam processes blacklist updates that could allow the software makers or others to install malicious code during the update process.

http://sysomos.com/insidetwitter/mostactiveusers
When Sysomos published its initial "Inside Twitter" report last month that looked at the people on Twitter and how it was being used, we discovered that 5% of users accounted for 75% of all activity. This finding was based on indexing 11.5 million accounts, and then looking at the top 5% users who accounted for most number of Tweets.
We found that 32% of all tweets made by the most active Twitter users were generated by machine bots that posted more than 150 tweets/day. The actual percentage of machine-generated tweets among the most active users is probably higher than 32% because there many bots that update less than 150 times/day. Based on our previous "Inside Twitter" report and this report on the most active users, 24% or one-quarter of all tweets overall, are generated by these very active bots. Many of these bots, however, are not spam, with some examples being @diggupdates, @deliciousrecent, @imdb, @twitseeker, @rosehose, @ladyreporter, @nieuwslijstnl, @dogbook, @ combatsi. The last three on the list - news updates from Netherlands (@nieuwslijstnl), real-time updates on what pets are doing (@dogbook), and updates from Second Life game (@combatsi) - each generate more than 2,000 tweets/day and rank as the most active bots.

"13 months and 11k lines of code later, i’ve finished up the choose your own adventure project. all told i ended up cataloging a dozen books from the early-to-mid 80s, looking for patterns in their construction and in the paths made by different readers through them. these short, simple books had a surprisingly complicated structure with their interlocking pages & choices. as a kid the idea of writing one and keeping all those pages straight boggled my mind. what was lost on me at the time was that even a list of hundreds of page numbers can be comprehensible if it’s redrawn as a diagram. these days i feel like i approach everything that way. so here is my look back at an obsession from my past, using graphical obsessions of the present to guide the way." via http://etc.samizdat.cc/2009/11/the-rules-of-the-game

Evolution: The Eight Stages Of Listening « Web Strategy by Jeremiah Owyang | Social Media, Web Marketing
http://www.web-strategist.com/blog/2009/11/10/evolution-the-eight-stages-of-listening/
As Social Customers Become More Empowered, Organizations Must Have A Listening Strategy As we approach 2010 planning companies need a strategy around listening. Sadly, most companies, and their agency partners don’t know why to listen or how. As a result, they must identify which stage of listening they are at, and then set a goal on which stage they see to aspire in 2010. I originally published this matrix for client workshops and a keynote presentation on developing listening and advocacy programs, and I’m going to continue to share more and blow-out each of my slides.

Your Looks and Your Inbox « OkTrends
http://blog.okcupid.com/index.php/2009/11/17/your-looks-and-online-dating/
When it comes down to actually choosing targets, men choose the modelesque. Someone like roomtodance above gets nearly 5 times as many messages as a typical woman and 28 times as many messages as a woman at the low end of our curve. Site-wide, two-thirds of male messages go to the best-looking third of women. So basically, guys are fighting each other 2-for-1 for the absolute best-rated females, while plenty of potentially charming, even cute, girls go unwritten. ....the most salient of which is that the average-looking woman has convinced herself that the vast majority of males aren’t good enough for her, but she then goes right out and messages them anyway.
This week we will be confronting a fact that, by definition, haunts the average online dater: no matter how much time you spend polishing your profile, honing your IM banter, and perfecting your message introductions, it’s your picture that matters most.

Elizabeth Warren: America Without a Middle Class
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/elizabeth-warren/america-without-a-middle_b_377829.html
While the middle class has been caught in an economic vise, the financial industry that was supposed to serve them has prospered at their expense. Consumer banking -- selling debt to middle class families -- has been a gold mine. Boring banking has given way to creative banking, and the industry has generated tens of billions of dollars annually in fees made possible by deceptive and dangerous terms buried in the fine print of opaque, incomprehensible, and largely unregulated contracts. And when various forms of this creative banking triggered economic crisis, the banks went to Washington for a handout. All the while, top executives kept their jobs and retained their bonuses. Even though the tax dollars that supported the bailout came largely from middle class families -- from people already working hard to make ends meet -- the beneficiaries of those tax dollars are now lobbying Congress to preserve the rules that had let those huge banks feast off the middle class.
Today, one in five Americans is unemployed, underemployed or just plain out of work. One in nine families can't make the minimum payment on their credit cards. One in eight mortgages is in default or foreclosure. One in eight Americans is on food stamps. More than 120,000 families are filing for bankruptcy every month.
Can you imagine an America without a strong middle class? If you can, would it still be America as we know it?

What Went Wrong With Joost?
http://gigaom.com/2009/06/30/what-went-wrong-with-joost/
Joost, a much-vaunted online video startup, today announced that it will offer a white-label video hosting platform, thus entering a crowded market littered with the carcasses of other failed video hosts. The company is also losing its famous chief executive, Mike Volpi, whom it’s replacing with Matt Zelesko, the current vice president of engineering. And it plans to cut a portion of its workforce — between about 70 of its remaining 90 employees, according to Advertising Age. It also shut down its office in the Netherlands.
Joost had an early mover advantage and then stumbled, in the end, it mostlyl boiled down to a lack of content.

Daring Fireball: Why Apple Changed Section 3.3.1

hat’s how Microsoft became Microsoft. At a certain point developers wrote apps for Windows because so many users were on Windows and users bought Windows PCs because all the software was being written for Windows. That’s the sort of situation that creates a license to print money.
John Gruber’s interpretation of the iPhone SDK developer agreement change, which Steve Jobs endorsed when asked about the change: “I’m not arguing that it’s anything other than ruthless competitiveness. […] I’m just arguing that it makes sense from Apple’s perspective — and it was Apple’s decision to make.”

Humans make errors. We make errors of fact and errors of judgment. We have blind spots in our field of vision and gaps in our stream of attention. Sometimes we can’t even answer the simplest questions. Where was I last week at this time? How long have I had this pain in my knee? How much money do I typically spend in a day? These weaknesses put us at a disadvantage. We make decisions with partial information. We are forced to steer by guesswork. We go with our gut.
Does anybody really believe that long hours at a desk are a vocational ideal?
Gary Wolf, of Wired and The Quantified Self, describes personal data collection and analysis in NYT magazine.

The signal strength bar visualization unfortunately exaggerates the signal loss, and that part can definitely be corrected with Apple's upcoming patch.

Ghana Ghana was the only African team to make it out of the group stage at the last World Cup, and expectations are high this time around. Unfortunately, their best player, Michael Essien, is hurt and will not play, but the team has talent, and they seem to be free of the organizational difficulties that plague other African teams—i.e., they have not fired their coach in favor of a Swede.

He recently had two luxury bidets installed in hotel room" "England has won World Cup before, but when hosting in 1966, & host countries always do well. That said, they weren’t a fascist country. Fascist host countries do really well; witness Italy in 1934 & Argentina in 1978. Apparently creating a hostile & frightening atmosphere for opposing nations, & being able to threaten your players &/or the referees with horrible fates, helps your chances considerably."
Watching the Swiss play is almost as painful and degrading as being an immigrant living in Switzerland. Will they lose in a dull, cowardly manner in the first round, or will they lose in a dull, cowardly manner in the second round? The world awaits the answer.
