Goodby Lumos and Micromuse, hello Google

After 9(!) years I’m leaving Lumos (well, Micromuse currently, post acquisition) for a cool position in the Google Enterprise group in the Santa Monica office.

It’s hard to believe it has been that long, and it felt very strange to resign. It’s kinda sad because little of the team is left, but hey, everything continues until it, well, ends :)

It started in ‘95 when Telops wasn’t working out, so we left there around June, spent a few months trying to get an idea together, launched with no external funding at a very humble office near LAX with Steve, Ramy, and Marwan (thanks guys) and a bit of a subcontract (thanks Bobby), then got going with a nice deal with TCSI and we sloooowly grew organically (i.e. with no VC) to something like a peak of 70 people, when thru 3 more offices, and ended up in a nice, 30,000 sq ft office at MGM plaza complete with something like 75 Aeron chairs. We had several products, 2+ million lines of code and 100 or so customers, but in 2001 things got tough, and after 9/11 it was clear how bad they were and we had to lay off people (sorry everyone, that was a horrible day…). Things were very dicey in 2002 and it was too late to raise money, and fortunately Micromuse acquired us in December of ‘02. We were down to 35 people then, and there has been a gradual exodus, and some more were laid off, and now I think there are 6 ex-Lumos people still with Micromuse.

Thanks to everyone who worked so hard at Lumos – we definitely built some nice software and had a great modern culture and style.

Misc things:

Q: Where’s the largest concentration of ex-Lumos people?
A: At Symantec, Santa Monica, at the same place where most of the Lumos offices were. I think there 5 people there.

TBD: I have to post some pictures from the archive…
